1917 SC (restocked)

Thought I’d post a few pics of my SBT as I had it out today to remove the trigger guard for a peek to see if there were any marks left by whomever restocked it. Nothing I can see that sheds any light on it.

While researching the s/n for my letter, Chuck Bishop sent an email stating that the configuration I stated in my request was not as it left Meriden and asked for some pics.

He was kind to say that the job appeared to have been done well, and suggested it could possibly be a Remington or DelGrego stock. He advised lifting the trigger guard and looking for a s/n and the letter “R” stamped in the channel which would indicate that the work was done by Remington .

Neither were present.

Regardless, it’s been a pleasure to take to the trap range. I’ve been going each Tuesday since receiving it and usually shoot 50 to 100 rounds through it.

Any suggestions as to how I could determine a DelGrego Restock would be appreciated.

Carry on.

John, that looks like a really nice early SC. I’ll be running 200 rounds through my DelGrego/Runge upgrade tomorrow, as the trap season officially kicks off for me.

I don’t believe it’s a DelGrego restock as it has no mullered borders on the checkering. They would have done mullered borders.

Thanks Dean!

I failed to mention that it originally left Meriden sporting a straight stock and not a pistol grip.

Whomever it was did a great job. I have seen many SBT’s with far inferior fitting of stock to metal. Beautiful grain in both the stock and forend. Must be worth a couple extra targets!

It is not a delgrego stock.

Any chance you’ll make the Southern this year ?

The "straight grip" claim could easily be an error in the stock book or the order book, wherever the claim originated. The trigger guard looks original. Why isn't it a Del Grego stock. We want to know.

Unfortunately, no. Once again the Southern is scheduled for the same time as the Georgia State Trap Shoot.

Bill, I already explained that in my above post.
DelGrego would have mullered the borders of the checkering like an original would have been done.

Further, as the comb nose isn’t close to original Parker-ish, it isn’t even DelGrego-ish either.

beatiful SBT - For those in the know - I didnt realize the variation of engraving on the SBT's. Two pictures below are btoh SC grade. Is this early gun / later gun ? engravers preference ? Top one looks like a lot more work.

The following is from Chuck’s email to me but states that when mine was produced , they were still standardizing the design.

The top one is a very early SC, 1917/18. After the first year or so, the SC’s feature the pigeon in flight.

the best thing about understanding this variation in engraving - is that now i have an excuse to buy another one...

As Mr. Dave Fjelline would say................

"There's only one thing better than buying a Paker................buying two!!"
