On a break during a past hunt a close up of a resting VH 16 gauge 0 frame.

Nice! What were you hunting…and where?

Gerald McPherson 01-02-2026 10:18 AM

I like the soft case colors.

I grew up shooting my grandfathers/dad's 16 ga VH. Still have it. Larry DelGrego restocked it for me some 12 or more yrs ago as my grandfather ordered it with far too much drop for me and the stock was pretty punky from yrs of oil on it. 16s still rule in my book on grouse and quail.

Todays images are from a brief bit of rest after a long push in the grouse woods on one of my old labs last hunts.

Nice gun, beautiful labs, although I'm a setter guy, I appreciate lab's.
It is so bitter sweet hunting our old dogs, we always want one more hunt, one more season with them.

Truer words were never spoken… :(

Very pretty gun! Looks like Bacheldor case colors. Who did the restoration?

Ken Frazee 03-09-2026 09:08 PM

The late great Dr. Oscar Gaddy addressed the case colors after this family gun was passed along.

What an honor to have a Parker that was restored by Dr. Oscar Gaddy, possibly the best ever at duplicating the original Parker color case hardening results!!

I read your initial posting and while I love the gun, the part about your dogs made me misty eyed. I too hunt Labs. Pheasants, quail and waterfowl. I try to have a young understudy to take some miles off of my older dog. My Ranger is 11. He had a strong year. However, I can feel it coming. When you pick that puppy up, you sign up for ALL of it. God bless you. Thanks for the post. As a new guy, I’m not sure I managed to get a picture to go along with this. If so, my young guy is Colby.

Handsome brace of labradors you have. Well photographed after a successful hunt. Share your mindset and method typically on having an experienced lab along with a younger hunting lab to learn the way. At present we are down to one. While pleased with her continued progress even after our old lab passed it feels unbalanced.

Although this gun isn’t a Parker it is a 16 resting on a fence post. I put it there to get the dogs in the truck and thinking about eating lunch. After driving about 3 miles to a little shaded area I started getting ready for lunch. When I reached in to move the gun case out of the way, I noticed it was a little light and something was missing. I quickly put the dogs back in the truck and drove back to my last spot. The 16 was still there waiting to be picked up!
