View Full Version : It’s Coming Really Soon

Driving in Maine recently I am reminded of the inevitability that Fall is upon us in just a very few short weeks.
We are seeing the swamp red maples coming into color, a sure sign that we’ll be in full color by mid-October. The setter or pointer or the Brittany or spaniel will start getting “birdy” and will soon slam into a heart-stopping point. We’ll walk in slowly but with purpose, all the while talking to our dog, whoa… steady… easy… hold girl hold…
The flush will come. If not obscured by the bright foliage we may get a glimpse of the bird beating a hasty retreat. Will we be on line long enough to send a load of 8’s in a lethal direction…?
Only time will tell, soon enough but not nearly soon enough.

It’s time for those sleepless nights… those night sweats… but we have to wait.

Heading to Maine Columbus Day weekend and plan on getting two or three days in. I can’t wait. My place is a 45 minute drive from good spots so I will have to be up and out early to beat the crowds.

Couldn't prove it by me. 100+ here today, windy and dry as the proverbial popcorn flatulence.

Dean, some good musings but let's not give our time away. Fall and birding will come soon enough but meanwhile let's enjoy the warmer weather here in the northeast before the inevitable cold, snow, plowing, shoveling, ice, polar vortex, wind chill, clippers, "Lake Effect" etc that follow on.

Good point Frank! The older I get the less I wish for "hurry up" to any season!

As much as fall is my favorite season and I can shoot clays, hunt deer with a bow or hunt upland birds over my Setters, we all know what follows the gorgeous colors and smells. Six months of Winter is on the way. :cuss:

We opened on doves this last Tuesday. Had a couple of people over, pretty good day.
My GSP Riley was stoked! Birds are like crack cocaine to a bird dog.
No Parkers, yet. I opened with my Ithaca Lefever .410, because I can't afford a Parker .410
The Parkers will rotate in. Quail is next.
I'm looking forward to a quail walk with my little Trojan 20.
