Being the custodian of a great deal of Austin Hogan’s communications, graphs and studies of bores, chambers and chokes, among so many other things, I came across this letter today and thought I should share it.

Kind of a random post. Perhaps you would include the reference PP article for context?

The first issue in 2008 (the Del Grego letter is dated March) had an article "An Invincible Grade Parker in 16 Gauge" but the Parker Pages Index does not list the author.

Austin rarely listed himself as the author in his Parker Pages articles.
I found that a pita when trying to find articles authored by him.
I suggested he indicate himself in a by-line but he was too modest.

As Dean mentions, Austin's byline did not appear in many of his articles. When completing the article about the "Gold Hearts Gun", the final draft did not include his name. I emailed him (copy retained) to ask him to add his name along with mine and Mark Conrad's. As I recall, Austin did not do as I asked, the the article did not include his name.

The graphics are not of the same quality but that prevents copying them.
JD is always on top of it. We’re darn lucky to have him!

Thank you Pete because reading that Del Grego letter without re-reading Austin's fantastic article leaves one wondering what he's talking about. I still don't know what he's talking about when he says he works under a different set of rules. But then again, it's not really important.

Thanks, but that part was obvious in the letter. What I was interested in seeing, which Pete addressed, was, what gun/article, was Larry referring to.

Dean, I have all of my information on the Annie Oakley connection, but have not put it together in "auction house" form. Getting the John Phillip Sousa articles together was a piece of cake compared to the Gold Hearts Gun. Yes, there are definite links to Annie and the 1902 Grand American at live birds, the last one. The "Gold Hearts" article was under a Bill Murphy and Mark Conrad byline. If you can't locate it, let me know and I'll dig it up.
