Sorting through some photos and came across this. I love the 28, and in whatever form it takes. These are several from the safe.
(From the top: 24 inch MacNaughton, 28 inch Watson Brothers, 28 inch Holland and Holland, 26 inch Thomas Bland)

Ha! I have more 28s, including a nice little DHE that fits me well and has taken wild Bobs on special occasions.

Under the thread heading of "Other Fine Doubles" I thought I would show a couple of little Beretta 28 gauges. One is a 410E with the nicest little beavertail forend on it. And the other one is a pretty rare Beretta 28 gauge hammer gun with 2-1/2" chambers. They are both a lot of fun to shoot. And then there are the Brownings and the Merkel, but those 4 are O/Us.

Three years ago in Aroostic county, tight against Canada for most of a week with the Old Pats Society we had a 28 gauge Parker “Show & Tell” display.
What a wonderful bunch of grouse and woodcock hunters these guys are.

One of my proudest shots ever. VHE 28ga Skeet gun.
Gracie pointed this cock grouse in a tight spot under a cluster of snowberry bushes. I couldn’t walk it to flush it so I gave Gracie the “Okay get ‘im!”
The bird came out and up like a station 8 low-house. I don’t really remember what I did but I could feel the instinct in me and swung through Bum Belly Beak Bang!
I took its head completely off…

Dean I recall you posting that pic before of the table full of 28s! Would love to have the opportunity to examine that many Parker 28s at one time. Looks like 3 were 28" and the balance 26". And many with beavertails! I really like a small beavertail on a 28 gauge Parker.

Unfortunately I was not able to attend that year to see all of them and to meet you, Dean. I could have added my own VH 28 to that display but no longer have it. Over the years we have had many "Show Your Parkers" nights during the Old Pat's gatherings, but none so impressive as this 28 gauge display.

I also have an RBL 28, but can't locate a photo. Here are a few others from the safe. Two other AyAs, including a Number 2 are also not present.
Below are my John Dickson and AyA #453. The Dickson was the gun I used almost exclusively for many years and which has taken the vast majority of my birds from days when we had birds. It's a 1930s gun, and Jack Rowe told me he knew one of the workers whose mark appears on the gun. The AyA was a stand-in gun that I used after I broke the stock of the Dickson (the stock you see is a Jack Rowe made replacement). I had visited Mr. Rowe in Enid, OK the prior year to have a dent removed from the right barrel of the Dickson (slipped on an icy bluff while grouse hunting in NE Iowa). When Jack saw the broken stock he admonished me, "You shouldn't be allowed to have this little gun!" He was probably right.:rotf:
This thread has produced some great stuff. Thanks to those who have posted...and keep 'em coming. I'm still searching for a photo of my DHE.

Not the best photo, but the first I could find. An early 1920s DHE. It has tight chokes...and tenderizes some of the centered birds.:crying: (But, I'm not complaining!)

A few 28’s, and 1 20 gauge I believe.
From left we have 2 Parker’s by Mr Corona, a 20 I believe and the famous 30” VH 28. The gun on the right is 1 of 5 produced Grade 3E NID 28 gauges, 26”.

Well the good news is, if it is blued, that's a relatively in expensive fix based on what you paid for it. Otherwise, it looks like a pretty good gun. I already have two 30" 28 gauges, so that's the only reason I passed on it.

The price was right, $6800 or so. But the gun had some issues. Non original buttplate for one but the listing also said “chambers had been lengthened”. So that opens another can of worms. Someone may have gotten a rare one at a good price,,,, maybe. No mention of frame size in the listing. I have owned 3 30" Parker 28 gauge guns, still have one. I had a not so pleasant experience with one of those 3 with a barrel issue, so I wasn't interested in that particular one with reamed chambers. Still holding out for my 32".
Daryl Corona
03-20-2026, 01:43 PM
I can't remember all the specs but it listed for close to 7k, chambers reamed to 2 3/4", LOP 14". I called asking about the frame size but the gun had been sold from the AK store. For that price I'd bet it was on an O frame or there was something else wrong with it. Like Reggie said the gun might be a diamond in the rough or a money pit. Still looking for my 32" one too Reggie.

All Cabela's/Bass Pro knows is what they paid for it and what they're going to mark it up to sell it. Typically, they have NO understanding of anything about these vintage guns, except what others are pricing them at online. And if they can't find a comparable rate, they wing it. They don't know frame size from their shoe size or what factory butt plate should be on there from one that the last owner screwed on. For instance, last week I bought a 20 gauge side x side from them and when it arrived it was a 16 gauge. The employee turnover in these stores is off the charts.

Totally agree on the "experts" at Cabela's. They don't even know how to ship guns properly and I would urge anyone who buys from them to insist on how you want the gun shipped. I bought a Rem 3200 recently at a good price from a Colorado store and they shipped it here to my local Bass Pro. The idiot who 'packed' the gun put ONE thin layer of bubble wrap around the fully assembled gun, threw it in a box that was way oversized and sent it on. It arrived in Texas with a broken stock. You just have to insist on the proper way to ship these days, especially with the way the package companies handle things.

Great gun Randy. I prefer the O frame 28's. What are the chokes? Something between .016 and .020 (+-) in both barrels would make a great sporting clays gun.

Now I understand why they sent me a notice a few days ago about the gun's availability. For that price a guy could afford to do a partial restoration on the things that were wrong. But then some people are not interested in doing that for a variety of reasons.
