View Full Version : Is this rib seperating?

Pardon my ignorance on this, but I have yet to encounter a rib separation other than when they are obviously pronounced.
My question is regarding this trojan an old farmer showed me today when we were looking at his wheat crop.
Are these barrels separating or is it just age? I don't have any parkers that have a similar look on their ribs so I was just curious.
He was asking me what I might give him for it. The wood is in really good shape, action is grey but not bad but the barrels need some help regarding the bluing and whatever issue this might be.
Thanks as always.

Pictures aren't the best way to tell. The rib looks like something isn't good. Were you able to take the barrels off and try the ring test?

I have a cochlear implant so ring test doesn't always work for me.

Looks lifted to me. But hard to tell.

If the owner was willing and you really wanted to find out if they're lifted you could immerse them in hot water for a few seconds and look for bubbles.

The solder joint appears to be compromised and it looks like relaying the ribs is in order.

IMHO too hard to tell from pic...depending on what he uses to wipe gun down, and how careful he is, that could just be gunk the rag isn't getting too. What makes me think this is the uniformity of the stuff along what looks like the entire length of the rib. if the barrels do more than just a dull "thunk" when ring testing....then it may just be crud...another test is to hold them over a sheet of white paper and band on the backside with the heel of your hand and see if any rust falls of of those "cracks"

Hmm, he is asking 400 for the gun. But not sure I want to get into a barrel job over an old cheap Trojan...

for $400 it would make a fine rainy day gun.

And another $400 to re-lay the ribs?

I would just shoot it until the barrels start pointing the wrong way.

The forend also has an issue that would need to be repaired. I have enough projects on my hands currently that need dealing with. I think I can live with him taking it to the gun show this weekend.

Isn't it kind of unsafe to shoot a parker that the ribs are coming apart on?

Went back out tonight after work. Took another set of good barrels with me. His barrels do not ring and I can actually see the top and bottom ribs moving in the middle of the barrels when I push on them about halfway from breech to the bore.

That doesn’t surprise me at all.

So loose rib established, question remains is it safe to shoot barrels with a loose rib?
Dean Romig

It’s probably safe to shoot but the situation will worsen as a resul of the continued pounding from the concussion of doing so.

Yeah I would eventually fix it if I decide to get it, I was just surprised at the idea.

Umm... yeah, if the ribs move, they are loose for sure.
You can shoot the gun, but dont pay $400 for it.

It would be fair to point out the problem and offer $300 I would think. Good to see it go to a caring Parker guy for a good home.

Funny that a price is thrown around and i dont see in this thread any details on what parker this is. Grade?, ga.?, barrel length?, chambers? Etc.etc.

Are they Remington replacement barrels? I can't remember ever seeing 15 inches of rib without a section that included part of the rib inscription.

No they are the original factory parker barrels. The pictures are of the same stretch of barrels. They are 30 inch 12 gauge.

Thanks jerry. I missed that. So its a 12 ga Trojan with 30 inch separating barrels.
