Dear Friends and Members of the Parker Gun Collector's Association

The 2013 PGCA Annual Meeting and Banquet will be held on Friday September 27, 2013 and will include, among other exciting features, the much anticipated Silent Auction fundraiser. The Silent Auction has been extremely successful in generating much needed revenue for the PGCA and has included some wonderful donations of auction items from both PGCA Members as well as from businesses that specialize in sporting related products.

The items to be donated need not be new or expensive, just something you think might be of interest to your fellow PGCA members. In the past some of the best items were those homemade/handmade items from some of our more talented members. Please look around at your accumulations of shooting and sporting equipment for anything you thought you needed but find you can do without and let Dean Romig or Larry Frey know what you would like to donate. Thank you for your continued support.

I recognize that off site bidding for these items may be a logistical problem, but is there some way those of us who cannot attend could participate in the bidding? Would result in more $$ for PGCA

John, that topic was raised last year and unfortunately we simply do not have the technology on site at the auction to accomodate or accept remote bids. We have a BOD teleconference coming up and we can discuss it then but I don't anticipate a positive outcome.

To add to what Dean said it is our goal each year to sell all the items at the auction. If somehow we were able to sell some items remotely we would then have to bring them home, package them appropriately, and ship them. This would add work and expense to the process.

Anyone whose been to one of these events the last few years knows that Dean and I only solicit the donations, it's really our wives that get stuck doing the work. I will run your suggestion by the girls but I don't have a good feeling about the result.:nono:

In my mind, you don't need any accommodations for off site bidding during the auctions. Let off site bidders send in one bid prior to the auction. If there are extra costs, add them to the winning bid. Opening up the process to a wider audience should result in more money for PGCA

I have a museum grade full shoulder mounted Impala from our safari to South Africa. The mount was done by a South African taxidermy outfit by the name of 'Lifeform'. They are one of Africa's premier taxidermists. The mount is in excellent condition. I would be happy to donate this to the silent auction if the powers that be think this would be an attractive bid item. Pics can be sent if needed before judgment is rendered. just pm me and if the powers that be feel it would not be a suitable silent auction, that's not a problem either. I shot 2 impalas and had both mounted so letting one go is no problem and keeping both is not an issue either. Just pm me either way.

How about some pictures Allen... or at least tell us its dimensions, top to bottom. Most folks are travelling long distances with little extra space in their cars. It's a very generous donation so don't let me put a damper on it.

I picked this up at an antique shop in Maine last week... it will go to the Silent Auction.
A 5-piece condiment set in its original box made by the Meriden Silverplate Co.
The design is known as "First Lady". It has some minor tarnish covering each piece but
the set appears to be very lightly used - no marks or scratches or polishing swirls.

Dean, I'll take some pictures of it in a few minutes and post with some dimensions. Mr. Purtill has seen this mount in our family room while he was drooling uncontrollably over the BHE I had for sale awhile back. George can attest as well. If it is accepted as a silent auction item, I can bring it down to the event on the Friday. Stay tuned for pics. This was one of 2 Impalas that I shot. This one was taken late in the day after Jean and I had walked our butts off in the bush and I had asked out PH to drop us off at one of the waterholes where he had a blind set up. We sat there for over an hour taking movies of all manner plains game that around 5 pm decided to come to water for a drink. This one was one of about 20 or so Impalas that just showed up out of no where to drink. We were hunting bigger game during the day and all I had was my model 70 375 H&H mag. When I decided to take this one animal and shot it (at about 20 yds) - that slug knocked that impala back about 20 feet. Never seen anything like it. Couldn't resist the shot though. I'll post pics shortly. My apologies for droning on about this.

Dean, the impala roughly measures approx. 37" from the tip of the horns to the base of the neck.:rotf:

I have 250 loaded 12 gauge brass shells in 10 metal boxes ,a Remington promotion some 30 years ago. The card board box has never been opened and I will bring this to the Annual meeting for the silent auction ,along with other items . Jean and I are cleaning house in preparation to DOWN SIZE !!!!

Thanks Allan, that sounds like a great item for the auction and is very much appreciated. Tom Carter made a donation again this year of a pair of his timed hammer screws valued at $100.00. Also PGCA member Brian Dudley donated a $100.00 gift certificate to be used towards stock checkering. We have a bunch of other items on the way as well and I will create a list soon to allow those attending a chance to save their pennies between now and September 27th.

I will be bring 3 pine shipping boxes for a 28",30" and 32" gun . There is no reason to ship an expensive Parker other than in a DAMAGE proof container.

I am receiving a good number of donations for our Silent Auction from sporting-related businesses.

Here's a LOM case I will be donating. It is just right for a 28" or 30" No. 2-Frame Parker.
Kevin McCormack has done some restoration on it a number of years ago but the end cap has since popped off. The end cap is with the case and I'm sure Kevin can easily stitch that back on. Everything else about it is very good.

Incidentally, The cap popped off because of very old thread.... Kevin had not done any work on the cap.

Unless your name is Casper Milktoast, You can't call yourself a Parker enthusiast without a Parker vise in your workshop, barn, or garage. The best part of winning this lovely #88 is that you can say you a have a piece from Edgar Spencer's personal collection. The leadscrew is in excellent condition and it is smooth as silk. The jaws close up parallel and are in very nice shape. I spent a few minutes cleaning it up and it looks so nice, I may have to bid on it myself. Delivery Not included.
PS: If your name actually is Casper Milktoast, and you win it, I'm sure there will be someone to help you carry it to your car.

This package from Russell Moccasins just arrived today with a note saying the retail value of these chukkas is over $400. They are really nice and fully exchangeable for your size. He tells me he will be at the Vintage Cup in one of the tents and can probably do the exchange right there.

Dean, per Larry's note above, I will be bringing the Impala mount down on Friday. We can make the exchange at Addieville. I may also have en early Ginger Peck framed waterfowl print to donate. She's a noted wildlife artist today but when we purchased the print (circa early 70's), she was just getting started.

Here's another lovely little LOM case, donated by Jim DiSpagno. It's for a small bore gun, .410 and possibly 28ga, with 28" barrels. It opens on the large end for the butt stock, and the barrels go in the small end. Apart from one closure strap loop being torn it's in very nice condition. The spectacular Charles Hellis Hammer .410 that came in it will be for sale at the Vintagers.

In last weeks mail I received a package with a pile of prints and miscellaneous sporting related advertising material from our friend Angel who donates faithfully every year. I no sooner send him a thank you note and another package arrives with six or seven Parker/Sporting related books. Once again Angel, we thank you for your generosity.:bowdown:

Well, Mr. UPS just dropped off another box here and it is from L.L. Bean.

Inside is this fabulous L.L. Bean 1912 - 2012 Centennial Anniversary Collector's Knife.

It is an extremely well made knife with an overall length of 11", genuine stag-horn grips, a solid brass bolster and a blade width of fully 3/16"... it is one rugged, high-quality knife.
It comes with a collector grade sheath impressed with the L.L Bean logo as well as the "Bean Boot" centennial impression.

Also included is a 'cabinet grade' display case made of beautiful "bird's eye" maple.
Retail value of this collector's knife is $475

Today I was perusing new arrivals in a local antique shop and I picked this up to read the fine print.

It's going in the Silent Auction. I haven't heard of a Parker Mammoth before this.

This clock face has a 5 5/8" diameter.

Also received a package today from Jeff Kuss.

He sent a SXS ashtray and the gun is made to represent a Parker D grade by it's appearance.

Also in the package were a pair of Parker Pocket Scales pat'd 1880.

Last is a nice three piece C.M. Powers brass cleaning rod.

Fellow PGCA members,

In response to the seemingly yearly request, and in an effort to not have to store leftover items in my basement, we will for the first time this year following the Annual Meeting be holding an internet silent auction for current PGCA members on this site.

I will be meeting with our esteemed webmaster during Happy Hour before the meeting to hash out the details of how this will all work. Dean and Kathy, Dave, Deb and I spent the better part of Sunday tagging items and logging them into the computer. There are currently over 100 great items that will be for sale so there is something of interest for everyone. I will be taking pictures of the items currently in our possession and add others as they come in. Obviously those of you attending the Annual Meeting will be rewarded with first opportunity as a benefit/enticement for attending but there will very likely be some very nice items remaining.

If this goes well we will consider how we can expand or improve how we do it for next year.

You have probably been to more of these affairs than I have so you realize how much work goes into them. I'm not just talking about the banquet and auction either. It's the whole weekend, setting up and manning tables at the shooting grounds, doing registration and memberships, and awards, etc. The planning and work for this event starts right after the Spring Southern SxS in late April.

The only reason we had not tried this before was we are often times "too few" trying to do "too much" and even the thought of a new project meets with resistance. It's not because it's not a good idea but it's finding more people willing to pitch in. The other reason, which I guess I didn't stress enough in my last post, is that the auction is first and foremost a "Benefit" to those attending the meeting. We hope that this year being the 20th Anniversary of the PGCA we will be blessed with great weather, great shooting, and a great Banquet. I hope all who attend have a great time and that those who have never been to one of these events will give it a try in the future.

Your right about that but when I say we, I mean everyone who contributes in some way to keep this ship afloat. There are many who's name's most are familiar with and there are also many who contribute in their own way "behind the scenes" so to speak. We are indebted to them all equally as each job is important.

Okay, I tried to take some group photo's to give people an idea of some of the very nice items that will be present at this years Silent Auction. Some items have already been posted and some like the 12"x21" curly black cherry hand made tray with the PGCA logo etched on it from Burl Bob, or the LOM case with the hand painted PGCA logo from members Dave Webber and Charlie Herzog have yet to arrive. I will try to post pics of these and others as they come in. As always we really appreciate the wonderful contributions from our members and supporters in the double gun community.

A recent arrival from Gordon Smith is a copy of the April, 1943 issue of Remington Action, Ilion Works which is the Remington plant newspaper. It has some very interesting articles related to wartime efforts as well as personal tidbits by and about Remington employees, many of which are obviously aimed at boosting spirits and morale during this difficult time in American history. There are a great number of employee names in this issue and the serious Parkerphile may recognize several of them.

This measures 16" tall by 11" wide as looking at the full front page.

Here's a pic of the "one of a kind" LOM case donated by two very generous members. The logo is hand painted by an obviously gifted person. The case itself does not show a name that I could locate but is stamped for 32" barrels.

I am a late yes on the annual meeting in Rhode Island. What do I need to do to get on the invite list for the meeting. Less concerned with the hotel.

Charlie, just show up and see Dave Suponski for tickets to the banquet. Dave is already at Addieville. Go to the PGCA tent... we have a big tent that is PGCA exclusively... we'll all be there every day.
