Your lever/closing problem IS related to the trip. And the pin that goes into the L-shaped trip is spring loaded. If there is no spring, then one must be installed. The pin must protrude from the trip about 1/16 inch or so for the trip to work... and hold the lever off to the right so the barrels will close down.
I can't guess at your trigger issue without seeing the gun.

Thank you for your prompt reply. Your post prompted me to get on my hands and knees in my shop and I actually found the spring. Maybe I can get this worked out in time for my December Caddo Lake duck hunt!
