What surprises me is that they needed a "study" to figure out what any loving dog owner has known all along.
Not only are the results of that study not surprising, as dogs grow and mature, they become more caring and sensitive to their master's mood, and health.

many if not most non-medical studies aren't needed and often find commonly known results - I've always thought of them as welfare for universities
