I think we will be seeing more of this - sort of an indeterminate origin of wood / metal/ engraving & finishing amalgam by various (mostly unidentified) artists, all very good at their crafts. The finished products are a type of "chimera" which at once mesmerize and confound potential buyers: "Is it live, or is it MEMOREX"? In these cases, it provides to emulate the words of Marcus Aurelius, "In each and every individual thing, ask what is it in and of itself?"

I agree with that. There are honestly very few shops that can do all the work at the very top level. I own guns I have purchased that are documented as done by one highly rated shop, and another that is completely documented as done by a different stockmaker, barrel guy, case color shop and engraver. All at the top level of reputation. I suspect that a lot of time, though, an owner shops it out and goes to one top guy and two or three average Joes. Guess who will be quoted in the ad?
