Are you thinking of "decarbonized steel" ?? Plain Steel is usually a twist type of damascus as is Stub twist.

Charlie, tell us about the Plain Steel Hammer gun you found. Has it been blued? Lifter ?

"Plain Steel" is not pattern welded steel and was used for a short period in transition from "Decarbonized Steel" or "Bessemer process homogenous wrought iron" which was sourced from Remington

The musket stuff was "Best Gun Iron" on this 1866 Price list

358 guns made with "Plain Steel"
11,866 guns made with "Plain Twist"

Probably all being lifters. But, never say never.

Hmmmmmm ... I've seen lots of guns with "Plain Twist barrels, but never heard of "Plain Steel" before ... So thanks for the enlightenment !
