Hi Bill,
That's a good question. Parker and Remington Parker kept three types of records we can base research letters on plus work order tags that the PGCA owns. 242357 is a very late Remington Parker and you are also correct that the IBM card info stopped in the mid 241xxx range. So where did the info on 242357 come from? The PGCA has copies of internal Remington documents detailing those guns that are in house for reconditioning and orders that are taken but not released. Your gun is on the "Wharehouse stock April 18, 1942 of items ordered but not released." It lists 33 guns with information similar to what you would find if we just had stock book information from the Parker Meriden days.
When the Research Letter search function found on our web site was developed, they included serial numbers found in the order books, the stock books, the IBM cards, the available work order tags, and the internal documents from Remington. Any research letter could be compiled from one or more of these documents.
