Early simmons rib question

I have a winchester 42 with a simmons rib and cutts comp that has the reciever part of the rib screwed on from the outside not from the inside like the current method from the inside of the reciever...Has anyone seen this before...the gun was done by simmons late in the fifties with a round post doughnut base rib and so maked on the rib,simmons specialtis pat.pend.and no kansas address...Thanks Don...

Bruce...Thank you for your responce...I did contact simmons and they told me that was thier method used on early guns in the fifties...Best Don...

The external screw system had been discontinued by the fifties but there is very little information except in the minds of collectors to confirm this. The important thing is that it is not a corner gunsmith's modification. The external screws are Simmons original.

Bill..Thank you...The gun was made in 1949...It has a round post donut base rib and a cutts comp...barrel marked skeet 2 1/2 inch cham. ...the rib cuts run east and west and are wavy in design...I know it is not win. done but at that quite interesting anyway...it has skeet wood by win...it is a good match to my win 12 skeet 20ga. cutts gun with no choke marking and a round post donut base rib made in 1957...Best Don...

My feeling about your 42 is that the rib and Cutts were probably put on when the gun was new. The visible screw attachment system did not survive much after 1949. I have never seen that attachment on a gun made in the fifties. My 28 gauge Pigeon Grade was made in 1948 and has the screws. Until I heard about yours, mine was about the latest gun I had seen with the screws.

I've looked at a lot of Winchester pump guns and every once in a while I buy one. I have a collection of Cutts guns as well as a useful stash of Simmons literature. I also have an example of most varieties of Simmons rib installations on Winchester guns. Collectors found out many years ago that Simmons employees who know about the early days are all gone. Apparently, the new generation is going to be a big help to Parker collectors.
