Parker VHE SN150XXX

2 of my guns require using the top lever for closing. I was cleaning the above gun (a 1908 manufacture) and found that opening it is much more difficult than any of my other Parker guns. In order to close the gun, with or without shells in the chamber, I have to operate the top lever. I have the same closing issue with a 1904 manufactured VH Parker. My other later built Parker guns close on the receiver without having to operate the top lever. Ideas??

I suspect that excessive oil has gummed up the inner working so that the parts don't slide as they should and your thumb on the lever is required to over come the resistance of the old oil. I suspect a good cleaning would fix it. Just guessing....

Also, I suggest that you always use the top lever to close your gun. It is my opinion that "snapping" a gun closed will cause more wear to the action than pushing the lever over and gently releasing it after the gun is closed. Others my disagree but hey, it can't hurt to be gentle on these old guns and it just may help to avoid a trip to the gun doctor.

I'm with Robin. The gun is so dirty and gummed up that it is not working correctly. I suggest using Rem Action Cleaner. Hold the action pointing down, insert the tube nozzle through the hammer nose holes and spray liberally. Leave the action pointing down so all the crud runs out and repeat over the course of several days. That usually does it but if not, the gun will need to be taken apart and cleaned. Most operating problems with Parkers are because of dirt and dried oil.
