Double Gun Journal in association with Rose & Scroll Fine Gun Journal is Back in Digi
In case you aren't aware...
Just became available December 25, 2025. https://doublegunjournal.substack.co...utm_medium=web I subscribed at $90/yr. . |
I joined last night
Just subscribed. Pleased to know it’s back! Thanks for the heads up, Dean.
Are the Cote's involved? If so, to what extent?
Yes they are fully involved as co-publishers.
. |
I realize it's a digital world out there. I just think about the excitement I felt whenever I saw a new DGJ in my mailbox; opening it up was like receiving a gift, and I'm not sure seeing something come up on my computer will give me the same feeling or the same level of enjoyment. But maybe I'll come around; who knows?
Same feelings here Phil.
. |
I subscribed today too. I prefer old school hard copy too, but I’m willing to give digital a try.
The duck hunting sequence was amazing.
Can't bring myself to do it yet. I can't even read a digital newspaper. I had a Kindle, threw the damn thing away. That being said there are nicely produced outdoors paper periodicals that I think are total crap I won't read either. I'm going to wait to see what folks say after reading this digital release.

I would like to see the format. I don't need to see old DGJ articles republished in digital format. New material would be most welcome and I would consider writing articles again if there will be compensation for contibutors. Good luck I hope it works.
Craig I think the approach they’re taking is someone will read the old articles. That’s something I can’t do without losing focus but want them to succeed so I’ll end up subscribing. First class video work if not a bit contrived. But what else do we have?
Watched the latest feed from R&S/DGJ this AM. I thought maybe there would be new DGJ content, but it looks like it’s all narrated articles from the DGJ run. The R&S articles so far held little interest for me. My biggest beefs, and I find them both highly annoying, 1) the lispy British accent of the narrator. Same guy does all the articles so far that I’ve seen. No need for the accent. 2) You have to set up a Substack account to receive the feed. You not only have to scroll through the posts to see R&S/DGJ, but then you see all the leftist BS that is posted there. Call it leftist, liberal, communist, socialist, Marxist, democrat, etc, it’s the same evil ideas. I will not be renewing my subscription. Daniel and Joanna had a great thing going in the DGJ, but this didn’t add to it. Just my opinion.
I wonder about copyright permissions for republication of articles, beyond the authors' submittal for one-time insertion in the original DGJ?
What the Mountain Man said - I used to bend the knee for Garden & Gun magazine until they went so far left with PETA, DEI and other nonsense they could qualify for hiking board handlers in a log canoe race. Called up to vent and the first thing the chirpy receptionist asked me after initial pleasantries was where I lived and how old I was. And that was the end of that!
Garden and Gun piled up in my library so fast that I cancelled just to get room to work. When Dan Cote asked for material for his proposed Volume 3 of The Parker Story, I immediately emailed him (as he had asked) and offered my research material to him (again, exactly what he asked for). Weeks have gone by and he has not replied. After asking for gun and research information for a proposed new Parker Story reissue, only a few hours went by before his interest passed to his Rose and Scroll project. No thanks.
So what’s the latest on the DGJ/Rose & Scroll Mag venture? Nothing posted since early February.
Interesting use of AI to reconstitute previously published articles. Good to see a Gordon setter as the “poster dog.”:rotf:
Another three months have passed since my last post and still no reply from Dan Cote concerning my offer to contribute my research material for the Volume 3 The Parker Story. Apparently, the Rose and Scroll project took more importance than the Parker Story project and it seems like the Rose and Scroll project is losing momentum also. I wonder if there could possibly be a comment from Dan on this forum?
It would be nice to hear something from those who drummed up the new venture as well as from subscribers.
True, Daniel used to write a very nice ‘column’ in each issue and would communicate in it with his readership.
. |
I never subscribed because I abhor podcasts and can’t listen to someone read to me. I know how to read. Garden and Gun and Project Upland are also added to my dead pile after their drivel annoyed me enough.
I personally don't expect to hear anything about the Volume 3 DGJ or the Rose and Scroll project in the immediate future. I especially don't expect a reply to my offer for assistance. He asked, I responded, then only silence. I hope the ninety dollar guys get their money's worth.
I deleted the app from my phone and don’t follow it. Very disappointing. Obviously I will not be renewing.
So, again, I’ve subscribed. It’s not a podcast, but is a digital production that is pretty classy. So far it’s just a rehash of previous articles. The most recent being Mr. Kidd’s piece on Fox small bores. I read the original back when, so it was not all that engaging for me. They are soliciting new material. Not sure I’ll renew, but I always want to try to support efforts like this which are few and far between.
I know it's not a podcast Garry. I'm a visual learner and reader, I hear the Charlie Brown teacher when I'm listening to someone read to me, and that includes audio books. "Whawawwaaaahhhh Charlie Brown...."

That's my problem with it too Garry... just a compilation of already printed articles from the Very classy Double Gun and Single Shot Journal. I wonder if they have solicited nesw material?? Sure would be nice... it would get me to renew, I think. . |

Garry, one small question… which special hammer gun did you have in mind?
I think, at this time it would have to be the Lifter bequeathed to me by the late, and previous to my tenure as editor, former editor of Parker Pages, Austin Hogan. If only that marvelous gun could speak it would tell its own very interesting history. . |
My "Austin Hogan Lifter" is about my favorite shooting Parker. On a lark, I took it to a shoot where score is jealously kept. I shot the best score I had ever shot on that course, even when I had used my competition guns.

I might be able to come up with something for their new endeavor… or possibly for Parker Pages… we’ll see.

There is a railroad car full of articles that can be accessed from our members if Dan would reply to our emails. He isn't replying to mine, so I assume he isn't replying to any of the others.
