I finally found a FINE DH made in 1902. I've been looking for one like it for a long time, it seems! It has 30" Damascus barrels, which ring true on a 1 1/2 frame. Under the breech it has stamped 4 w/ a D under it, and to the right a C. To the right of that is 3 13 (barrel weight?) with a 3 to the far right (near the breech end.) On the opposite side is the Pat'D APR 11 1876 (?). All numbers match up. The barrels have no dents and look great! The muzzles measure .720 and .705., for me. What do all of the numbers mean?
No screws have been turned, the barrels are outstanding. The safety is automatic w/ the only difference being someone at one time replaced the SSBP w/ a Hawkins pad - oh well! The wood was not even squared up prior to the pad installation. I did clean up the wood and the silver oval. The triggers are very good. Needless to say, I'm VERY happy with it!! ( intend to use LIGHT loads, mostly.) The weight is 7 - 2.
I'm sure this has been discussed before but what is the meaning of the X stamped in the top groove for the Dolls - Head? Plus, it also has a +stamped on the end of the breech, near the extractor, on each barrel. What does this signify, or is it a mystery? I haven't seen this before, as I recall.
It will be put back into service, first on the skeet and SC range here and then onto the bird fields this coming fall. I do intend to bring it to Des Moines for the Feb. PHEASANT FEST to let those in attendance see it. (I think you'll like it too, Bruce!)
Thanks for any answers to my questions I've asked. I knew this panel of experts could help me! Thank you! Have a great summer season!
