Dean, my great-grandmother, Annie Hopkins, was full-blood Mi'kmaq (Micmac) of which I believe Passamaquoddy are close kin and I also have a tintype same setting to prove it! My great grandfather, owner and captain of a merchant sailing ship, had a great eye; Annie Hopkins was handsome, of striking beauty and she passed it right through to my grandchildren

Dean Romig wrote: I have one picture ... It is all I have of them - no lore passed down unfortunately, just a deep love of nature and a constant compelling urge to be out there in it, hunting and fishing.
Dean: The picture is a wonderful heirloom and that is not all you have of them. You have some of their genes and that manifests itself in your love of nature.
You actually said a "deep" love of nature. Mature hunters and fishers have arrived at the "deep" love.
At the risk of stirring an old simmering pot, I believe that the vast majority of anti eat anything wild crowd, will never develop that "deep" love of nature and many of them would not know how to conduct themselves in nature. Drop any of them in some unknown wilderness with an equally "lost" hunter/fisher and we might see how soon their attitudes would change.
Dean and King: Back to the pictures, if not already done, take a moment with a decent digital camera and capture several images. If there are any imperfections (creases, missing portions of the image etc.) they can be readily repaired in Photoshop. I say "readily" for those who know what they are doing. I'm trying to learn that program, which could take the rest of my life to understand it all. That said, I would happily try to do a digital restoration purely as a learning experience for me, if that is of interest.
Drop a PM to discuss if you like.
Cheers,
Jack

Thank you for your offer of assistance, Jack. Only tonight I solicited the help of my niece to guide me through the labyrinth of computerspeak. My iMac has Photoshop 7 and I've thrown myself into photobucket and resize. My problem is not understanding the lingo well enough to follow instructions. What got me fired up was just finishing a photo portfolio of a start-to-finish goose hunt in the toughest weather and ice conditions I've ever encountered---everything authentic and accurate in colour, composing and sharpness---and thinking of a couple shots as a contribution to the board. (The photo records were for my buddies.) Last edited on Sun Feb 8th, 2009 01:18 am by King Brown

I'll try photographing it and we'll see how it comes out. I'm sure it will be some trick as these old things are highly reflective.
