I just received the letter on my 20 ga DHE and the gun patterned originally a 200 # 8 pellets in a 30" circle at 40 yards. Sounds like Mod - Improved Mod to me, based on Parker's original specs. Both bores measure 22 thous so I assume they are basically a tight Mod. Thoughts? |

Thoughts, pellets on a plate are a truer gauge of performance than constriction at the muzzle. And, a well choked gun was a complex series of measurements over the length of the barrel to achieve good densities. Our modern guns with their single plane screw in choke constrictions over a couple of inches are not an improvement over what Parker was achieving a 100 years ago. |

Chart didn't post correctly  Jay, There are 358 #8 size shot in a 7/8 oz load. You said there was 200 pellets in a 30" circle at 40 yds. That would be a .010" choke with todays loads, or Skeet 2 I sent you an E-mail, any questions call me. Last edited on Fri Jun 12th, 2009 07:09 pm by Dave Miles |

Depending on how early a 20g it is the test load could have been the standard 20g load of 3/4 oz. but if so that would have put the pattern at 74%....at 7/8 oz as used by Parker in the mid 1920's would be about 64%. Pretty tight still at 40 yds for 20g using fibre wads.This uses Dave's quote figure of 358 to the oz. If the test was done with Tatham shot the count might be slightly different as shot size per oz figures varied widely among shot manufacturer in the early 20th century. My 32" #2 frame 20g magnum DH is choked .029/.029 and 70 to 72% is about as well as I can do at 40 yds with 1 1/4oz of #6s. I had a 32" DHE 20g at one time that was choked .010/.010 and that one would hardly pattern 40% at 40yds with #8s... In a modern gun I think most people would refer to a 20g choked .022 as (light) full. I have a 32" Remington Model 17 factory marked "full" and 30" Winchester M21 20ga 3" factory marked "full/full" and all the barrels are choked .022".
