I just got my letter from Mark on my EH #59633. The letter states that the gun was ordered by C. J Godfry on March 17, 1894. Funny thing is when you check the serial # on the home page, it indicates the gun was built in 1890. Was it common to have a stock of guns that far in advance, or was that a time when they would have been busy filling special orders? Thanks, George

I think the answer to that is no, it is not too unusual. Hopefully someone will chime in if that is not the case.

An EH exactly like yours may not have been a popular configuration so it may have sat in stock until an order for just such a Parker was received. I have a DHE that was finished in 1908 and sat in stock until an order was placed for just such a gun in 1912.

I had the same "issue" as George on my EH. Per the tables, it was built in the latter part of 1893. The letter mentions the order was placed in March of 1894, and it was delivered in October of 1894. (dates are from memory, but they are reasonably accurate...)
If this gun was made in late '93, and sitting around waiting to be ordered - why did it take Parker the majority of the year 1894 to ship it out ?
Were receivers made & kept in inventory, and then pulled out & the gun assembled around that previously made (previously numbered) receiver ? That's how Springfield Armory built guns (such as the Trapdoor Springfield), and this is why the gun's serial number can sometimes be up to a year or so "earlier" than the date the gun was proof tested & accepted (per the master armorer's dated stamp/cartouche on the stock).

Is it just possible that the hammerless guns being relatively new just didn't catch on very quickly with the waterfowlers? Dean is your DHE a !0 Ga. also? Thanks, George

George, all the guns filling orders on the same page are in the 79xxx range. I have no idea why your gun was still in inventory but it was. It may be the weight of 10-8. Pretty heavy for a 10 ga. with 30 inch barrels.

No George, my DHE is a 28 gauge. And it is a 0-frame made as a 28 ga., not a 16 or 20 sent back for a set of 28 ga. barrels. Last edited on Wed Apr 22nd, 2009 02:22 am by Dean Romig

Over 10 pounds and only 30 inches, that beast has got to have some wall thickness.

Destry, old age is a wonderful thing. I measured the thickness at the muzzle about a week ago.....and now I can't remember. Gun has been sent off to be put back on face. I'll check it again when it comes back if I remember! Did make some notes,3 frame, unstruck 6lb. 7 oz, finished 6lb .o8oz.
