Dave;

Fantastic photo, such dog love and dog comfort evidence makes it much easier on my Dixie since my wife viewed this photo.

Thanks for the photo;  PTG Roger

Nothing looks warmer than a pile of English Setters.  I just wish I could get half as comfortable on the couch as my dogs do.

Bill - if we put your setters in the bow of an AuSable boat do you think we could get them to point some nice browns for us?

Jay,

Judy is staunch on all species of Trout,  our only problem is I have not broke her on Ducks and Geese.:D  This could be a problem.

Pictures taken today, Trout season is not open yet, I could only watch.

That and "grassing-up" and AuSable boat.  I do have a little marsh boat that is hell on AuSable river mallards.  Seating is a little tight for two guys and there is no room for a dog, but it will put a quiet guy on a duck before they stop feeding.

An oil painting of my two littermates, Bridger and Elizabeth almost 12 years old.  You are not going to believe this ,but this was done from a photo of the Dogs on the front of a boat looking at a big bird.  It was sent to China by a friend and the cost was $475.00.   I had it copied on a digital scanner and had some made on canvis to give to friends.

Gentlemen,

I started this post to hoping to see all the Dogs that share your lives.  It has become obvious that not many of them live in a Kennel.

This is last summers haying crew! Trish would bring lunch, and the labs in the mule. You will notice the neckerchiefs, whick signifies the "Pooch Caboose" has just left, after grooming all four labs. These labs are groomed monthly, at the ranch, and couldn't survive a night outside. We are down to three, as "Suede" has passed over "Rainbow Bridge".  Stormy is the young chocolate female, "Silky" is the older black female, "Pinky" is the big male yellow. Lon

Fred years ago I picked one up for a friend in North Carolina.  It was one of the greatest Dogs ever.  Use to run rabbits that we hunted with our recurve bows.

Bill,  She came from NC; got her at our annual Bluetick Days hunt here in Ashalnd County for $100, last day of the event, the seller didn't want to take her back with him.  She's gone now , but was a great hound and a beautiful personality.  I don't competition hunt much, then only locally.  I don't care if my dogs are a little trashy as long as they only work something that will climb a tree.

Fred,

Molly use to sit on the edge of the pool, and if my friends kids started rough housing to much, jump in after them and drag them out.  The Dog would even retreave the shot bunnies.

Bill:  two things, the Turkey mount was exceptional, second damn it I see all  of these

setters in your pictures and I am afaid that I am going to have to get one.  You mentioned a place the last tiime we were together  whoops, a pheasant just flew by my window,  now back to dogs, where can I get a setter pup.  As you know from being at my place, my dogs don't live in kennels either.

Best regards,   Van

Bill:  FOXY, our little white dog became a bit of a legend in the pheasant fields.  Those who saw her, at first chuckled that I had her along.  After watching her find, flush and mark a downed bird, the chuckles turned to incredulity.  The  regulars were disappointed to  not see her last season.  Except for retrieves, she was as good as TAZ and sometimes picked off a bird he had over-run before he hit the brakes.

So, if you haven't tried your Eskie in the field, you might be pleasantly surprised.  I'll be uploading puppy pics in a day or so.

Cheers,
Jack

As are yours, Bill. What bloodline/background are your setters. Timber is from October Setters in Idaho. They are Ryman and Old Hemlock stock types with some crosses here and there to more field stock.

Timber preformed well as a pup this year and I think shows a lot of talent and smarts in the grouse covert. I can hardly wait for next Fall.

Bill:  At our tender ages, we really shouldn't "wish our lives away".  That said, I wonder how many are thinking the same thing? :D Your pictures ensured the thought crossed my mind.  It happens occasionally - during and between breakfast, lunch and dinner most days (October November and December excepted of course).  On a side note, I spotted three nice roosters yesterday less than a couple miles from home.  Normally, I drive two to three hours to see pheasant.  We have had three good years and their range is extending.  Never thought I would see them here in numbers.

Here is a photograph of my Llewellyn setter Pepper. She passed away 2 years ago from cancer. It was a tough loss and I still miss her. She was my fourth setter. I'm not sure what life would be like without a setter to share my home and life with. It certainly wouldn't be as rich.

Jack, it hard not to think about Fall and hunting. Grouse hunting is just too much a part of what I am.

I think about hunting and shooting at work ... I take pictures of firearms for Cabela's Lehi, Utah Gun Library four days a week. On weekends I'm out with Timber or in the field shooting wildlife photos. In another month or so I'll be wandering the coverts nearby listening for that low rumble you feel more than hear. Summer will be conditioning me and the dog and some shooting to get tuned up for Fall.

See life revolves around Fall and these guys.

I shoot mostly now with Canon digital SLR bodies. These days I'm using a Canon 5D and 20D.

The blue grouse photo was the 5D with a Canon ef300 f/2.8 L IS lens with a 1.4x extender add. The more recent shoots of Timber are from the 20D with a Canon 100-400 f/4.5-5.6L IS lens. That package is about perfect for walking around in the field and taking candid hunting photos ... most of those were taken by my wife. The young ruffed grouse was taken a few years ago with a Canon 10D with a Canon 400 f/5.6L.

I'm kind of a Canon guy. I do a fair share of wildlife photography. the Canon bodies fit my paws and the buttons are all in the right places for my fingers. I can make setting changes by feel without taking the camera view finder away from my eye. Also when I started shooting digital Canon had a larger selection of image stabilized lens at a better price than Nikon. I use a Nikon body at work. It takes a great photo by darn the buttons are in the wrong spots for my paws.

Bill,

I have the exact same couch as you do;). Brown leather with a quilt/blanket on the cushions and it's covered with bird dogs. In my case there GSP. I had to buy an extra chair so I would have a place to sit:shock:.

When I die I hope to come back as a bird dog for a Parker owner...a small bore Parker owner that is:D.

By the way where is Curran, MI?

Richard,

Bill shares his couch with Judy and Parker.  I get the chair!:D  Curran is in the north east part of Michigan.  It is about an hour west and south of Alpena.  Alpena is right on Lake Huron.  Hope that helps!  Bill absolutely loves and spoils his two girls.  He almost never goes anywhere with out them.  He would take great care of you when you come back as a bird dog and take you hunting with his Parker often.

Take Care.

Dear Bill who:  Let's see, cozy warm couch with Noel and treats or... in the snow and woods with heaven knows what that might be available to eat chasing around with some guy and his gun - Bill who indeed.

Here's CHARLIE on one of those rare moments she's not chewin', scratchin, diggin', jumpin', runnin', barkin'...........all said and done she's still not annoyin'.  She seems very smart.  Picks up on the basics quickly.  Came to us at 18 pounds.  Today, she's 24 pounds.   I took her out of town and she is curious and cautious.  She negotiates the snow well, whereas I left the snowshoes at home and just kept breaking through.  Made for tough hiking.  Can't hang them up yet.

Cheers,
Jack

Jack,

Charlie is adorable.  I told  my Son Pat about your American Eskimo.  He was amazed.  He is now rethinking his own (Caine).  The only problem with his is the dog gets very territorial.

Bill:  Here's a few of FOXY in the field to share with Pat.  Images taken over the years.  She passed last September at approx 14 years (she was from the humane society and guessed to be about 4 years when we took her in).  She had one season before we took in TAZ and one season after TAZ passed.  As well, one season TAZ had a cruciate ligament surgery, so he missed most of that one.  Each, in their own right, was a good bird dog.  In tandem, they were amazing.  I'm happy to have been a part of a memorable team.  CHARLIE has big paws to fill but no pressure.  Most days are "off season"  so it's more about enjoying life every day and having a ball during bird season.   Cheers, Jack

"Tis a rare late version prototype that never made it to production.   No one thought it would catch on.  It remains my back-up but at that time it was my go to gun, while the search was on to replace my blown up family VH.  I was 5 years Parkerless which was remedied last fall.

Bill,

Noel reminds me of the wife Audrey. She sits in the middle of the couch and has a dog on each side of her and one usually wiggles onto her lap:shock:.

Crazy Daisy and Gunner are at my side as I type, its as if they know I'm on the Parker site:D.

With 4 GSP'S a place to sit that isn't being shared with a canine companion is a rare occurance....and a lonely one;).

Richard:  Here's one of TAZ on the trail.  His nose was often calloused and occasionally reddened because he just never stopped.  During or off season, this was his typical look.   Would love to see some pics of your GSP's.

CHARLIE's growing up.  She's now 35 pounds, double her weight from the humane society.  According to her vet, she is also a full month younger than was estimated, which makes her now around 4 1/2 months.  Just starting to lose a couple of those needle teeth.  Most our walks have been in parks trying to socialize with people and other dogs.  She is pretty well socialized now and has been getting some solo country hikes.

We stumbled into this area when we went to an airshow.  She got a break from the kennel and just got into checking out the good smells.  I never saw anything but she wanted to hang around the area, so I just stood around watching her sniff the world.

I'm not sure if she can read but she stayed outside the fence here.

Cheers, Jack
