I'm looking to add a 10 ga to my collection because I don't have one. I plan to shoot turkeys with it. I located a very nice 10 ga damascus hammergun. Can I shoot 2 7/8 RST "Lite" 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 oz. shells through it or do I need to use black powder hand loads? I don't have time or space to handload as yet so I need something I can shoot factory ammo of some sort in safely.
Thanks

Usually RST's will be fine BUT you should have the gun examined by a competant gunsmith prior to shooting it.
FYI- We use our real names on this forum.

I shoot RST's through the three 10 gauge Parkers that reside with me. The "D" and "DH" have Damascus barrels and an 1881 has Twist barrels. As Rich Anderson said you should have it checked by a gunsmith. Most of the one's around here would rather advise you to keep rattlesnakes in the house as shoot a gun with Damascus or Twist barrels. Where are you? we might be able to stear you toward a good gunsmith.
Good Luck, Harry

To answer your original question, the RST light ten loads probably have less chamber pressure than a black powder load. RST will reply to your questions about pressure, but don't normally publish pressure figures because their data is always being changed as research continues.

The RST's work great in my Damascus Hammer Parker(courtesy of Bill Wild) 10 ga. I also handload with 7625 and 1 1/4 oz of shot. RST is a lifesaver for us with nice old 10's.

I am just outside of South Haven. I do get to Holland and GR fairly regularly on business. Any guidance would be appreciated.

In Grand Rapids there is Brad Bachelder, a master gunmaker who does nice work on doubles. He just re-did the damascus barrels on a friends double- nice job and he even bakes on a protective clear coat. His phone number is 616-459-3636 and web site : http://www.bacheldermastergunmakers.com . Good luck - Paul

Robert,
Just north of Chicago is Dennis Potter 13960 Boxhom Drive Muskego, WI 414-425-4830. He is a crackerjack gunsmith and helped Sherman Bell's blow up Dr Oscar Gaddy's GH as well as my VH. You may not know that story, but they wanted to know at what pressure and where a Damascus barrel would blow. The short answer is that both the Damascus Barrels and the Vulcan Barrels blew at the breach at about the same (31,620) psi.
