This morning I promised Bill Tapply that I would inform the Parker Gun Collector's Association community and the Ruffed Grouse Society of this auction. I told him that I am enormously reluctant to do so because of a selfish streak - that I wanted to buy "Burt's Gun" myself - but I promised Bill. Coming right up, Dean. I, for one, will not bid against you. Maybe other PGCA members will honor your interest in the gun and not bid the gun into the stratosphere. Thanks, guys. The payback will be that Dean will promise to continue his research on the William Harnden Foster skeet fields in his town of residence. |

Let us all respect Deans quest for that nice little Parker and pray he gets it. I'm sure we have all been blessed with opportunities like this and it would be a shame if some unappreciative profiteer got his hands on it. Provenance like this is worth more the some celebrity gun. I met Bill Tapply for the first time, after having traded e-mails with him for several years, off and on and I must tell you, he is a gentleman and quite cordial. Austin and I enjoyed talking with him until "Burt's Gun" was about to be auctioned. The winning bidder was a 'telephone bidder' and, to date, we don't know his identity. We were, however, stunned at the hammer price of the gun and it just goes to show, one more time that there is a lot that can be said about provenance - quite a lot! I was not the lucky bidder as the bidding quickly went right past the ridiculously high limit I had set for myself, in fact, so quickly that I never even raised my hand  I know Bill Tapply must be delighted with the outcome of that auction and I wish the new custodian of "Burt's Gun" many happy hours in pursuit of "His Majesty, The Ruffed Grouse" with what will surely become his 'magic wand.' We visited The Cobbs Auctioneers on Saturday for the preview. Bruce Cobb welcomed us, and allowed me to take the Spiller gun across the Contoocook and photograph it in a lovely autumn day background. The pictures will appear in the issue of Parker Pages now being put together. Pam made this photo of me, in a proper Spiller period shirt. There were at least five active bidders for the Spiller gun on the floor at Cobb's, and at least 3 on the telephone. The opening bid was $3500, and increased by $250 increments with several active bidders through about $7500, and at least three through $10000. The final bid was $10500, subject to an additional 15% buyers premium. Only one of the floor bidders was known to me; the successful telephone bidder remains unknown. The right kind of provenance appears to have value. We speculated before and after if the successful bidder might be a Darrydale collector. Best, Austin Attached Image (viewed 333 times): |
