Hello All, Happy new year and website. I was wondering if we were ever coming back! Thanks to all for their work. I was wondering about oil soaking . I look at pics of guns on the net and have noticed lots of them have very visible streaks that look like either oil soaking and or rust streaks are they both common, or do they just show up on those net pics?
I have been looking at some guns with the possibility to buy and I think to myself "for a 6500- dollar gun that stock looks like doo- doo." Is the discoloring curable without redoing the stock? and is it preventable. Is this something that just happens when the gun is used, like wear on the case colors and am I over critical of this condition. Please let me know your ideas on this. Thanks & Best Paul N Rogue River OR

Oil soaking in gunstocks is a common problem with older guns. With guns standing up oil from the receiver migrates down into the stock. This is the reason that some people recomend that you turn the gun upside down with the barrels down to prevent this from happening. If the oil soaking is not to bad and has not rotted the wood it can be fixed but you would have to refinish the stock to do it. Eric
