They say it is better to be lucky than good. And, this past Saturday I saw the world's luckiest bird at the Hidden Hollow shoot.

We had a squad for the shoot with Larry, Dave, his son Danny and myself from CT, Dean from MA and Rick and Daryl from MI.  Deb, Cathy and Jan also came along. The weather was perfect and while I had missed the evening before's festivities, everyone was up bright and early before lunch time. ;)

Hausmann runs a nice course with a lot of fast crossers at moderate distances. We got to a station where there was a really fast short crosser from the right. One of those shots where from a low mount you need to get it done, pass through and pull the trigger without a lot of thinking about it. You had a small window to shoot the bird, so you get your mind set to just do it quick.

Deb was pulling so I called for the target, it appeared exactly where I expected it, I got a really nice track and pass through and just froze.  At the instant the clay pigeon came out, a live bird had flown on  exactly the same path and was trying to outrun the clay pigeon right at my break point. With a bit of lead, I was holding directly on some sort of a small black starling that was flying to beat the band.  I just let down and looked at Deb trying to figure out exactly what had just happened. Fortunately I did not take the shot, as I am not sure what the fine is for Starling out of season in PA, but at 20 yards with a full choke of RST #8s, there would not have been a lot of evidence for the Court.

The bird managed to turn off as the clay pigeon just sailed serenely into the woods. I have had pheasant wander around on the ground while I was shooting clay pigeons over their heads and you regularly see the odds and ends bird on a course, but never before have I seen a bird outrun a clay pigeon.

Daryl was grinding targets pretty good. I believe he was one bird off high score in 12ga when I came in on Saturday. And, Rick was also shooting some nice scores. We would have easily beaten the Fox guys, but they were busy playing some game while we were out shooting the real course. :P And, got to meet Paul Plunkett's daughter and to kid her a bit about her dad still having our $50 from Addieville. We need to do something about that.

A nice day gentlemen. A pleasure.

For me it was the Motrin kicking in ;), and the possibility of a new hammer gun:D.

Although I missed out on shooting Deb's new A grade (it's still hers isn't it Larry?) I did get to shoot Larry's wonderfull AAHE.

It was a great venue and a good time was had by all. Oh by the way Dave just for clarification all that determination paid off as I cleaned that station........didn't I?:?.

It was great to put faces with names although I already knew Rich's and Larry's faces.  Some things do get better with age.  Sorry Greg, I'm from MD not MI but I liked the thought of being near the UP.  For those of you coming down to the Vintager's in Sept. I had mentioned setting up a days shoot at one of the nearby clubs where we could blast away for a lot less than $50 for 50 birds.  There is also a possibility of a dove shoot if there are enough birds around and there is enough interest.  Just something to think about.  Anyway it was fun shooting with you all and I wish I could have stayed the whole weekend.  Definitely next year.

A few more pictures . . .

Here's Daryl Middlebrook's unofficial PGCA welcome wagon. Daryl, standing to the left, Ed Muderlak seated and, forgive me, I can't recall the third gentleman's name but inside that nice LOM case is a very nice GH 12 bore on a 1 1/2 frame with great original Damascus pattern and lots of original case color.

Thanks Daryl for your generous hospitality and refreshments.

Station No. 1 Sunday, the bunny hop station. The rabbit was sent up a ramp and about 8 feet into the air. It looked easy (and it was for a few) but I only managed to break 1 out of 6 :(

A little affordable shooting before Vintagers sounds like good fun. And, if we can get Daryl to join us at Vintagers, perhaps we could get our $50 back from Plunkett and his  nefarious Fox Gang. ;)  He says it is in his wallet waiting for the challenge.

Greg,

Starlings are a non-native species hence you can shoot them at will. We used to have sort of a loose club when I was in high school that, once hunting season was over, would go out and shoot starlings off a huge roost in the evening after school. We'd kill literally thousands in a winter if the ammo or reloading supplies held out.
