A friend sent me some pictures of that gun actually, an interesting piece for certain. I didn't call to see what it sold for, one punt gun is all I need.

I love spring too! Instead of heading out fishing like Richard (how cool to jump in your own ski-plane and wing it to your favorite fishin' hole) I stayed home and made a new rod building jig so I can add to my pile of fly rods at a lower cost (If I value my time at $0 that is). Since I was finishing it up with my Parker Gun mug full of black mud, I'll post a picture as my salute to spring. Hopefully I'll have a new 9' 4 wt soon and I'll drive, not fly, to my favorite hole to try it out. Attached Image (viewed 89 times):

Dave - What do you use as a thread tensioner?

See that little black post in the middle of the upper shelf? That little gizzmo is an adjustable tensioning device, you just pass the thread through a slot on that thing and it varies from light tension to break-the-thread tight. Works very well and costs only $7.00.

Dave
Is it just as easy to build 2 four weights as one? Dont have one, and just wondering.

Angler's Workshop in Woodland, WA has them. They have a web site, but their catalog is especially good, I read it cover to cover... just like Parker Pages. You might try a rope on log before you try fishin' with one of my 4 weights...

Bill I've probably made over a dozen rods -mostly graphite fly rods (3 wt to 9 wt), but also cane, and one spinning rod for may dad. My wrapping setup isn't as elegant as Dave's but the fish don't seem to mind

John,
Spent the last few days Discing food plots, and had a big oak that had the top blown out this winter that I quatersawed into 2 1/2 boards. I forgot how heavy wet oak is. My back is killing me. I would love to be able to make my own Flyrod, what a neet hobby. I have a spring fed pond 40ft from the house with Native brookies, and another with Browns, Rainbows and Golden trout. The dogs love to point them and I like to catch and release them.

The blank is made by Pacific Bay... it looks and acts just like a Winston but costs about 1/4 as much. You can put your thread in a coffee cup and run under a phone book a get satisfactory results. I built this jig just to keep me busy and away from surfing the internet for guns!

Last rod I built was a Temple Fork - similar to Sage, but much cheaper, - even if Lefty Kreh does endorse them. Four piece 9" for 5 wt. Took it to Alaska last summer. Nice stick. For spring tension on my rack,. I mount the thread spool on an axle, and adjust the tension with a wing nut working against a bit of coil spring. Not pretty, but neither am I

Dave,
So this building flyrod thing is only therapy for your addiction of Parkeritise? Or have you other problems, say Smith, Fox, Purdey?
It appears you building me a 4wt would be good for your home life, and your pocket book!
Just trying to help a fellow PGCA member

We could work something out Bill... you must have a nice DHE gathering dust you'd trade for a custom 4-piece? Just kidding of course, here's my problem, I have an insatiable desire to tinker so building things like a rod jig or a fly rod keeps me from messing with my guns. I have many rod and gun disorders... all so difficult to control.

Dave,
I try to sedate myself with enough Famous Grouse that searching on the internet for guns is impossible. This is the only cure I have found that works so far.
