OK - I know that I should NOT have let the guns sit for a week before I cleaned them (and I will NOT do that again)...
But, I was surprised to see a very fine (very thin) layer of nice orange rust in the chambers of my EH 10 gauge Parker after shooting Vintager shells. (However, no rust was seen in my 12 gauge Parker hammer gun that shot the same ammo.)
Has anyone had this experience before, or was the real cause the stainless steel GaugeMates (10 - 12) that I left in the gun for that entire week ?
I know I goofed up, but this could be a lesson to all to not leave the chamber inserts in an uncleaned gun.
(...of course, it's also a general lesson to just clean the darn thing as soon as you get home !)
Anyone else observe this ?

John,I get kidded all the time by some Parker friends and also guys at my gun club about cleaning my guns EVERY time I shoot them. But so far no rust and no corrosion..
I would think the surface between a chamber insert and the chamber would be a great place for moisture...

| I wouldn't get too worked up over it. Early Citoris and Berettas would rust their chambers even when they were cleaned and oiled. Spin some oiled steel wool in them to clean it up. I bought a bunch of wooly mop snap caps just for my "modern" guns to combat this problem.

After each shoot/hunt, I'll definitely give them a quick swabbing with Hoppes & let them soak overnight.
Then I'll finish up & oil them the next day, when (if after a hunt), my body stops aching !
It sure beats the ordeal of cleaning up after shooting black powder !!!!!

My magnum 10 gauge does that, the bores will rust up real easy. By my regular duck gun, which sees a lot more service, never rusts anywhere. It's the gun, not the ammo, just taking a guess.

John: Sounds like a bit of an odd thing for chambers to rust like that. I wouldn't be surprised if leaving the inserts in had something to do with it. Regardless of what I clean my bores with I swab them with ballistol afterwards. Seems to work very well. If I were using something like those inserts I'd wipe them with ballistol before I stuck them in. I can't imagine anyone giving anyone flack about cleaning their guns every time they shot them! That's certainly what was hammered into me as a youngster...

Agreed !
I guess I got lazy... I used to shoot muzzle loaders exclusively, so I had to clean them immediately. Then, I got my first Parker & shot BP shells in it, so I still cleaned it immediately.
Now, upon discovering Vintager (and RST) smokeless shells, I guess I just got complacent (and lazy).
No more - I'm changin' my evil ways !

I clean my duck gun once a year whether it needs it or not.
