Just got back from a couple of days with the family in Vermont. While I was there I had a chance to play a little with my nephew's toy! Some of you know my love of Chevy trucks.

454CI,12 bolt rear with 410 gears,400 Turbo tranny, headers 780 Holley and a lot of torque!

When gas was $4.00, I "gave away" my 454 Suburban, now I want it back but can't get it back.  It was a special order dream machine, rubber mats, crank windows, four wheel drive, 4.10 gears with Detroit Locker in back, factory coolers for everything liquid.  It was barely broken in.  Only one of my mistakes that involve cars and bird guns.  I wish I could be like Dave and have visiting privileges.

Bill,I remember you talking about your Suburban. That truck had the perfect options.Did it come with a dog box!

I,m really a small block guy at heart(I like RPM) but torque has a way of winning ya over. :)

Dave,

Nice truck. I too have always been a SBC guy but there's nothing like the rumble of a big block. The sound of an L88 427, LS6 or LS7 454 gets the blood pumping.

So is the AC original??

If you like the RPM's here at the local 1/8 mile dragstrip we have a "Big Dog Shootout" once a month and these guys normally run either the 10.5" or pro mod class. There is one guy who has a SB in a Corvette and he leaves the line at 14 grand. If that don't get your heart racing nothing will.

Bill,

It's a shame you had to sell the Suburban. My father-n-law has one and he won't sell it for love nor money.

I'll second that motion. How in the world do you keep an engine together at 14K?! I thought 10 was about tops for a V8. That thing must sound like the gates of Hell have burst open.

Dave, all my trucks come with a dog box.  However, I let the Suburban go with one of those Armadillo Truck Vaults that sell for about the price of a good VHE Trap.  We used to sell those great boxes out of the gun store where I worked.  One of our customers bought a new Suburban and the box would not fit.  When he got the new truck, he gave me his old vault when he ordered the new one.  He is a great guy, gave me a Browning document safe when he moved south.  I converted it into a fireproof 39 gun safe.  By the way, my first Suburban was a 1972 like your nephew's shortbed.  That was absolutely the best vehicle I have ever owned.  However, it was a short timer that I only owned for 14 years.

Ask Dave Suponski what they sell for.  If he ever misses a bird with his, I may just get it back.

Interesting timming about old suburbans ...

My in-law shares your sentiment towards these old cars and over the weekend he dragged me out to "take a look" at one:

Now, I  like them new. According to him, this is as good as it gets but the seller does not want to come down ....

I had one of those C-10s with a 307 cubic inch small block.  It was some truck, gave me 16 miles per gallon on any day and 20 when I was willing to fool with it and disconnect the accelerator pump.  It was the slowest vehicle I've ever owned, but did the job.  It was the only car I've ever sold while sitting at a red light, making a deal with the guy in the next lane.  No, it didn't have a sign on it.

I had a four-cylinder S-10 that I'll bet a dollar was slower.

Now I reread my post, Dean.  My C-10 was a Suburban, not a pickup.  I think mine may have been slower.  It was still a hard sprung piece of machinery that went many miles, can't remember how many.

Oh, I failed to state that this was a 283 SBC and yes it had a sound unlike no other.

Bill, did your 307 sound like a Singer sewing machine? I had one once and it ran for years but it sounded like your mom's Singer sewing machine. Once it finally blew up I pulled the heads and there was no piston left in cylinder #3. There was a .120 thousands gash down the cylinder wall. Needless to say it went to the scrap yard.

Dave, a 302 is one hell of a motor. The "off road" cam produced by GM is one sweet sounding solid lift cam. I had a friend build one while we were in high school and he took it to the strip. He left the line at 8500 rpm and when he went to shift into second gear it would not go, so he let out the clutch and ran the 1/8 mile in 8 seconds. When he went home he pulled out the instructions from Zoom clutch and it stated " do not exceed 7500 rpm". The moral of the story here is it help to read the instructions.

We used to build those "302" engines and actually, I think, they really measured closer to 301 c.i. so we called them 301's when we stuck them in 55's and street rods and other cheap bodies. Real screamers they were when we put wild cams and solids in 'em
