Tanner is having a gun show at the Merchandise Mart in Denver this June 6-7.  Anyone familiar with them or these shows?

Is it worth going to for a double gun kind of guy or is it mostly "black guns" and "military stuff"??

Thanks,

Brian:  Tanner has a gun show at the Merchandise Mart at least 6 times a year.  Mostly modern stuff and junk.  Crossroads of the West holds a similar show on alternating months at what used to be the Holiday Inn at 1-70 and Chambers Rd.  Thus, there is a gun show every month in Denver.  You just missed the annual Colorado Gun Collectors Show last weekend at the Mart.  975 tables and nothing modern.  Tends to trend along Old West and lever action lines, but there were quite a few doubles laid out as well. including some Parkers and Smiths, as well as Hollands, Purdeys and lesser makes.

All that being said, I have found and purchased 2 Parkers at Tanner shows over the past 15 years.  You have to kiss a lot of frogs, but very occasionally a princess shows up.  You just never know when or where.   Since I am not actively "looking" for anything, I make about 1 Tanner show every couple of years, just to see if things have changed.  They haven't.

Hello Brian, The good show was this past weekend. The Colorado Gun Collectors Show.(The name is close to that) It is the only quality show that I am aware of. The PGCA sometimes has a spot there. This year I was out of town at an antique fishing tackle show. I was also out of the loop so I did not know for sure if the club had a table. My friend who attended said he saw more high grade high condition Parkers at one table than he has seen in his life so I thought maybe Bruce Day from the PGCA had set up, it sounded like his type of setup with perhaps some assistance. Bruce has guns that do not make me drool, I am awestruck to the point of tears. If you made it great, if not look for the show next year and mark your calender. It is that good and there are lots of quality dealers. The Tanner show will leave a lot to be desired. The last one I attended had maybe 3 Parkers and all beaters, overpriced to boot. That seems to be par for the course at that type of show. On the other hand you may get lucky and find a sleeper once in awhile. Whichever you choose, best of luck in your collecting. Paul

Paul:  Neither Bruce nor the PGCA made it this year.  The display your friend saw was probably Tom Bouwkamp's.  He has won several display awards over the years, but it is less a sale table than a Parker display. His NIB Remington 28ga VH with BTFE and single trigger is very nice, although some would prefer his AAHE or his .410.  I saw a couple of really nice LOM cases at another table, but when I came back Sunday afternoon to make the guy an offer, he had already folded up his stuff and split.  I probably wouldn't have offered him enough anyway. Sour grapes.

Eeee-Gad!!  And we went to Moab with the kids for a weekend hike where I almost coughed up a lung.  Had I known, we would have had an excuse to be in Denver for the show.

Thanks for the pointers, are there any other "shows" in Colorado I should keep an eye for?  Any on the Western Slope?

Paul, thanks for the compliment. I'm fortunate to have acquired a few nice Parkers but there are plenty of other collectors who have nice, if not nicer collections.

Mike, of course there is no Mr. PGCA, and in the last couple years I did attend and in the first year, Charlie Herzog drove all the way from below St Louis to support the activities of the PGCA in the west.  In future years, if a local member could take the major task of arranging for the table and arranging for help on the booth, maybe we could come back out. We can display under the PGCA banner, sell raffle tickets, pass out membership apps. This year, Mark Vollinger, who had previously been the sparkplug, moved for his wife's job transfer to Los Angeles, and couldn't run the display. So , maybe somebody there commit to full time or near full time presence at the show and we can get it going again.

Tom Bouwkamp comes all the way out from upper Michigan and has a wonderful display, one of Parkers and the other of Winchesters, that he alternates.

Best to you and your Parkers.
