I have a Parker VH serial number 174947 with 32 inch barrels. All serial numbers match, but the forend end latch and tip(top part of forend) have dark steel finish instead of the silver steel like the receiver. I assume that these parts might have been replaced as some point in its carreer. The wood on the forend appears to be the same as the stock. Is this a common repair and where can I find an original Parker silver forend latch and cap? Any info would be helpful. Thanks.

Henry, those parts may be original to the gun but for some reason, may have been blued or torch colored in the past. Remove the screw securing the forend tip and look at the backside of the tip. Stamped in the backside should be the last three digits of your Parker's serial number. Ditto the forend latch but it is a tad more difficult to remove.

Can I suggest that you don't use an ordinary wedge tipped screw driver, rather a hollow-ground tip that completely fills the screw slot. This will go a long way to ensuring that the screw heads do not accidently get mangled. If the slots are not completely clean, you may want to clean them out first to ensure you get a full tight grip when applying torque.
Regards,
Jack

Henry,
As sugested, the tip could have been blued. Before you start taking things apart, could you take a picture of it? There are some trained eyes here that could tell you exactly what you have. I doubt it is a replacement though stranger things have happened to Parkers.
Kindest, Harry

If it is found to be just blued, you can take a little vinegar and make it look like the silver steel of the reciever.

Thanks for the info. Yes- all the hardware on the forend looks like it was reblued or just blue to begin with. The lever cock or latch says Patd March 26 1878 like my other Parker. I will try to post a picture in the next day or so, to see what you guys think. I am not planning on unscrewing anything at this point. Thanks
