Buck Hamlin barrel refinish.

Its not a Parker and may not be appropriate to show so if anyone objects to it I'll take it off.

Not mine, and shown only as an example of an exceptional and collectible piece.

That is a beauty, Bruce.   I'm going to the gun room to beat my 97s with a stick.

Amazing wood, too !!!!

( A 97 was my first "real" shotgun - many years back.   It looks NOTHING like this beauty, but it's all original, sports no finish, but to this day it's still a beast of a gun that'll eat any 2 3/4" load ever made.    If I ever need a full choked, 30"barreled 12 gauge and the weather is too rainy & miserable to expose a nice Parker - this is the gun I take.)

It's an absolute tank !

I've always like (the idea) of Model 1897s. It was Harold Money's gun of choice and often Nash Buckingham's too. I've owned 3 of these, all straight grip "Black Diamond" Traps but my favorite was a 32" solid rib gun with a  28" cylinder barrel I had Andy's restore. I had a 16g as well. With the exposed hammer, they are a good gun for lefties... Alas, I shoot a few ducks with them and then sell them. There is a lot going on in front of you when you shuck a '97. Never let it be said John Browning favored simple designs. Nevertheless...the Damascus version is pretty cool, Cabela's has one whose barrel is just waiting to go to Dale's...

Bruce, if that buttstock is original to the gun, it could be a scarce Trap Gun with uncheckered wood, an uncommon but existing variation.  Some blocks of Model 97 serial numbers are included in existing order records at Cody.  Inquire by phone or on the Cody internet site about whether this particular gun may be available for a letter of provenance.  I'm sure all Damascus Model 93s and 97s are special order guns.

If it was a Trap or Tournament Grade it usually would not have the ringed fore end. Traps are almost always marked on the breech block.  Both would likely have the "black diamond" ebony inlay in the wrist.

Yup, that's right, Don.  However, many older 97s have lost the Trap Gun breech bolt over the years and some very early ones never had it.  I was making a wild guess based on the fancy but original configured wood in the buttstock.  However, Buck probably made that stock from scratch imitating the original shaping.  I have a fancy wooded uncheckered 1897 Trap Gun that I think is going to letter as original if I ever get around to getting the letter.  I'm not sure if it is in the serial number range where it can be lettered.  My uncheckered Trap Gun is unusual in that it has the correct Trap Gun breech block, black diamond, and matted receiver top, but does not have the matted barrel.  I have found that the matted barrel is not always present in very early 97 Traps.  I have seen one Cody letter for a factory engraved 97 ordered with no checkering.  I also have an old Winchester catalog that shows an uncheckered early high grade 97.  I have not seen an uncheckered high grade 97 with a ringed forend.  All I have seen have smooth forends.  However, some graded Winchester .22 rifles have ringed forends.

First, that's a really neat and unusual shotgun. Thanks for posting, Bruce.

Second, Bill's comment (above) made me laugh and then, since I've been sick all week, that set off a coughing spell. Kind of a convalescent version of the old "spit-take".

Jim
