I was in a city near where I live and stopped at a pawn shop that had some guns listed. I was looking thru some stuff and here was a parker butt plate that I had never seen. It was a dog head with a bird in its mouth. I bought the plate, the gentleman was very proud of it but anyway it says parker brothers. Looked at the guns I have that had dogs head butt plates but they are just dogs heads, no birds.any comments?

The DHBP with a bird (snipe) in it's mouth is earlier than the DHBP without the bird but the DHBP with the bird is very common, Parker having made tens of thousands of guns with this DHBP. Hope you didn't pay a price based on how "proud" the guy was of it.

Thank you Dean, I guess I had not seen one of these before, I was rather startled when he said because it was a Praker product he wanted 40 for it.
Any way I have it now. VanB

Sometimes you just have to buy it when you see it, I don't know what happens to our brains when we will spend thousands on our guns but question the cost on a small part, I was at a gunshow ,maybe nine months or so back and was digging through a box of old parts and came across a perfect condition Parker Bros. Pistol grip cap, I thought I may buy it for five bucks and when the fellow said ten ,I passed on it and still have no idea why ?

The snipe buttplate, the #1 size, is usually used on the #1 size stock. These stocks and the corresponding buttplates are used on some #0 frame guns as well as #1 and #1 1/2 frame guns. The 0 size plate appears to be decorated with a setter puppy and are used on #000, #00, and #0 frame guns. I have seen a few #1 frame guns with #0 frame size stocks and I assume the 0 buttplate would be used on these. The #2 buttplate is the one decorated with what looks like the head and neck of a very bulky retriever. This plate was used for the #2 frame guns all the way up to #7 frame guns. I don't think the era of the hard rubber buttplate has anything to do with the style used. Last edited on Sun May 10th, 2009 06:45 pm by Bill Murphy
