23.5 lbs, 7/8" spurs, 10 " beard
Shot with a Parker Hammer 12ga with 32" laminated steel bbls mfg 1890, not too far off from being the last known laminated hammer gun made per the parkers found section in the Parker Pages, listed in the book as a PT
Prelude: Just bought this one off AA and shot a round of sporting clays with it a couple weeks ago...tough to shoot well with F/M chokes. Had a hell of a time hitting the close birds.

Cocked locked and ready to rock, background: a Jason Crean slate over glass custom Lacewood pot call and Hickory striker....Jason is a fireman from Michigan.

Da bird

Not a bad piece of wood for a grade 1 gun, shot the old paper Western Super-X 1 1/2oz #6 into this bird at 35 yards. No need for the old Remington Express as a back-up in the right tube. Not much recoil with adrenaline and 8 3/4 lbs of gun.

Congratulations Kurt! That's a fine bird. What's the serial number of your gun? I have 74443 and 74625, both Lam 1 guns and both 16 ga. on 0-frames. Dean

Nice gun, nice wood, nice turkey, couldn't be better. Congratulations.
And some folks try to tell us we need an all camo plastic stock, painted matt finish barrel gun with extended "turkey" chokes. Hmmmm.....maybe its just a way to make a cheap gun cheaper.

Steve, like it or not, "cocked ready" is the way a lot of we serious hammer gun hunters do it. Remembering, of course, no gun is safe when loaded - even those with an "automatic" safety (least of all) and that to be 'safest' one must keep the barrels pointed in a direction where a discharge, whether intentional or accidental, will do no harm to an unintended target. Those who do not feel comfortable hunting "cocked ready" shouldn't do it and I certainly respect that choice but I, for one, will continue to do so and nobody has to hunt with me if they don't feel safe with me.

The subtitle of this thread offers an apology for a bird that needs no apology. That's a fine bird by any standard. Yeah, we all like those long, sharp, curved spurs, but in 30 yrs. of turkey hunting I have yet to figure out how you can judge them any way except post-mortem. We can only go by the beard, and that's a fine one. A 2 yr.-old bird is still a mature gobbler, and can be just as challenging as any other. Enjoy your success without apology!

Latest Laminated steel grade 1 in the Parker Pages is SN 72297 and a 10 bore. Mine is SN 63566 and made a little over a year prior. Probably not that many laminated steel guns made in that year. When you get bored with one of those top lever 16s you can ship it up here to MI. It will be very well taken care of.

Great looking gun and turkey, Kurt. I sure wish we had them where I live. I'll be sending a letter to Josh on Monday to submit 76,783 as the latest laminated. It is also a bit odd since it letters as a 0 grade even though TPS doesn't show any laminated in that grade. I guess it would also go in as the only laminated 0 grade as well. It is listed as a PT in the serialization book but both the order book and stock books have it as laminated. It's a 10 gauge, 30", top lever. I've been meaning to get to this for more than a couple of years now, but I keep expecting someone to submit a later 0 grade. Last edited on Sat May 9th, 2009 09:36 pm by Bob Brown
