RE: May 9th Shooting Contest

Greetings from N. 18th and Windram.

The Main Line is awash with rumors, that a few of you “ladies” will be visiting the hallowed grounds of Addieville East Farm, on Sat. May 9th; no doubt, another ad hoc PR campaign, to further promote that hinge-pinned contraption, you have the audacity to label, “Old Reliable”. (We do find it a bit amusing, that you would re-enter the public forum so hastily, after the drubbing you endured at the recent Sanford, NC races?) Since it is our belief, that the Fox gun is indeed, “The Finest Gun in the World”, far superior in design and workmanship to any other maker, American or otherwise, we feel it is time to put our respective claims to the ultimate test. To that end, we hereby offer up to you, the “Matrons of Meriden”, the following challenge:

Mssgrs Fox, Barthmaier, Eyster, Eisenlohr and Roll, hereby challenge a team of five, Parker representatives, to 100 birds Sporting, shot from 15 virgin stands. Cumulative score of five man squad, used to determine the winner. The prize: one U.S. fifty dollar bill, signed by the losing team members and deposited into the winning club’s treasury.

It is our sincere hope that you accept this invitation with some degree of alacrity. Though we hold the utmost reverence for the legend of the Parker gun, we cannot help but wonder, if your outlandish claims of success in the live bird and inanimate target arenas, stem more from a case of 90 proof fiction, than steadfast empiricism? After all, several of us here in the city of brotherly love, witnessed first hand, your shooting prowess, at last September’s, highly publicized, Pintail Point contest. As I will attest-- if hot air, were broken targets, you would all be Grand American Handicap champions, indeed!!!!

The favor of your reply is most fervently requested,

With warmest regards,

Ad  Roll

Sales Mgr.

A.H. Fox Gun Co.

c.c/ Ansley H. Fox

Aw jeez guys, dontcha feel like yer in some kind of old Western where the "Fastest Gun in the West" is continually challenged by every new "Hot Shot" in the territory ;)

Eventually some fired up "Hot Shot" shoots "Old Reliable" in the back and claims the fame of being the fastest

As representatives of the Parker Bros.Gun Co. we shall meet the challenge on the day and time indicated and in good spirit. As antogonistic as this letter appears we feel that further talk is not needed...as we say here in New England"actions speak louder than words"

Shooting from "virgin stands" has a certain charm, at least in choice of terminology.  I wish I lived a little closer to the farm.   I am, as we speak, attempting to construct a crossover stocked A.H. Fox pigeon gun.  With luck, it may be finished before too long, possibly less than five years from now.

Mere Parker envy, no more, no less.  The subject was well documented by Parker shooter Sigmund Freud.

We found the order for Freud's Parker when searching the records in 1998.  It was a rare Trojan Grade, 36" 10 gauge with the phallic extension rib!  I don't believe it has surfaced on the collector market.  Maybe it will show up at the Fox Challenge at Addieville to shoot on those "virgin" stations.

Bill,

Do you have further information on the "Good Doctor's" order? If you could post the info it would be good reading, while we listen to these "cheap, also ran" gun promoters, try to change history! Lon

See "The Future of An Illusion" ( 1927) as portends the Fox challenge.

"On Narcissism" ( 1930) is also interesting and recognizable.

WOW!

Dave I sure hope whoever sent that letter to you had their tongue in cheek (or wherever they usually put it in the city of "brotherly love"). I will gladly put up the $50.00 for the Parker side and perhaps discuss with the author the possibility of some side bets.

Yup,You got that right Dean! But I think it would just be easier to just let our scores tell the story!

Someone always wants to share the stage with the best ;)

Easily as much as anything else I missed by not attending the Southern was the good company of you and Deb, and Bill and Linda. Thanks for tipping your glasses in my "honor" (thankfully it wasn't in memory) and I'm making a promise to myself not to miss the Southern next year. We'll definitely catch up at Addieville on the 9th and unless Bill shows up at Addieville with that crossover Fox I'll have to wait until late September in Maryland to enjoy his company.

Larry,

I hope you have the AHE fixed in time for this shoot but by your tone I would assume you already have her fixed.

Thanks again for the beer Saturday afternoon.

Seeing as I will be unable to attend but will cheer for victory from the sidelines here is a tip for all competitors of team Parker. DEAN LISTEN UP:D keep your head down,(wood to wood DEAN) and follow through.;)

The nerve of some people, they just have to kick somebody when their down. They wouldn't have been so bold if we had won the challenge. Where were they when we did win???

I have it on very good authority (spoke with Bill Murphy tonight) that there are some very formiddable shooters in the Fox organization so, let's not get too cocky and let's practice up!!

Hey Rich, good advice. I'll put it to good use.

From this distance all in can say is that I wish all other differences of opinion could be settled in such an elegant way.
