I finally found a 16ga hammergun shooter at The Southern. It has 30" barrels choked full and full and I am going to open them up a little. This is not a pristeen gun and has already been messed with, so a little more will not hurt it. Who is the best to do that work?

It's my understanding that Turnbull is the only shop that uses a piloted reamer that works from the breech end and ensures concentric chokes. Hopefully someone else will chime in if this is not the case.  I would make sure you get polished chokes also. I have been burned on those two issues in the past, along with over reaming and leaving wayyy too little muzzle thickness. Remember the "do no harm" adage as you do this project.

I guess the question is what are you going to do with the gun, grouse hunt, pheasant hunt, sporting clays etc ?

Eric's question is fundamental to this discussion. My question is what are the bore sizes and what do the chokes measure ? i.e. what is "full"? I have 6 Parker 16gas including 2 hammerguns. Everyone of them has different choke measurements. Also what loads do you intend to use?

p.s.- Richard you are incorrect, lots of gunsmiths use piloted reamers from the breech end, Mike Orlen is one of them, Briley, Allem's GunCraft and dozens of trap gun specialists like Ken Eyster, spring to mind.

Mike Orlen in Amherst Ma. has always received high reviews for Parker choke work. He's quick and inexpensive.

the chokes measure .25 in each, shoot sporting clays and shoot RST 3/4  oz lite. My intension is to open them to .009 & .19.

.009" not .008" or .010"...019 not .018 or .020 ;) clearly, you knew your answer before you asked the question... I doubt you'll see a lot of difference between .019 and the current .025 with those very light loads but you won't know until you pattern them.

I'd leave those chokes right where they are until you've shot a few rounds of clays.  You may like them like that, esp. with the 3/4 oz loads.

Kass

The question was whom should I have do the work, not your opinion on what work to do.

David,

Send the gun to Mike Orlen, 413-256-1630, tell him how you want it choked. That's what it'll be when you get it back.
