It's my birthday today. I waited all morning for the local air base to call and offer the keys to an F-16... didn't happen so I loaded up a 28ga Repro, a box of 50yr old paper Super-Xs and flew out to the Wood River to chase ptarmigan. For a while it looked like I was going to get skunked, but that changed. It was as good a day as I could have expected. Same lake as last week but much warmer today.....

Notice the middle one is already changing over to summer plumage. Big mistake; he was the first one I saw.....

I don't mind telling you that I'm pretty envious. It's about another six months until most of us get to do any upland hunting :(

Wow, 150 hp will pull a lot of payload!

What a hoot.  Yesterday you went bird hunting in the snow and I cut my grass.  Fly that thing on down to the Southern this weekend.

Happy Birthday. Nice airplane, nice little 28ga and nice birds. One of my goals is to collect all the grouse species.

It's a lot like a floatation vest in extreme conditions. . . it may not save your life but makes finding the body easier :D

It really stands out in the fecal matter of those BIG bears.

Cost per ounce of meat..."priceless"

Calculations: For gas alone the 20oz of meat I got cost me $2.64/oz or $42.24/#. If you figure in total operating costs it comes to roughly $5.50/oz or $88/# !  Like I said last time, who keeps track, eh? It was a grand day for sure. I was pretty stove up after all that snowshoeing in wet heavy punchy snow that scoured a lot of spar varnish finish off my very best pair of snowshoes so, after a pan fried fresh pike filet for dinner, chased a beer with a muscle relaxant and crashed hard and slept like a log. Today's adventure will be a long soak in a jacuzzi at the local rec center. Sometimes all this adventure has a price!

For the record, I absolutely detest wearing ANY orange while hunting up here but that vest is the one I've kept in the plane for a while and is the only one I have that has enough pockets to carry the food and clothing you want on such a hunt. If I could find an old Filson vest that would do what this one will do this one would go to the Salvation Army post haste....

Happy B-Day Richard, I was planting corn today in southern Minnesota and only thinking about the pheasants that will be there in 6 months. It was 92 degrees. Jim
