I flew up the Wood River today, 1 hr from home, to scout for places to ptarmigan hunt. I had seen this lake on our way out from working on the glacier Sunday so decided to start here. From the number of tracks in this valley it seems there must be thousands of ptarmigan around but hundreds is likely more accurate. Tracks EVERYWHERE at any rate. It didn't take me but a few minutes to kick up two birds just a few hundred feet from the plane, but they were flying so they went away. Should have taken a scattergun instead of the .22. A bit more snowshoeing turned up more birds which were easily walked up and taken. What a day! Gorgeous valley; I'll be going back here with a 28ga soon....

Results. We won't discuss how many shots it took to get them....

Rich, I spent two weeks in Alaska in '92 and I was just stupefied with the vast beauty of that country. If I don't get back there while I'm still on the sunny side of the grass I will make is a point to go there as often as I can in the hereafter. I may come back as a ptarmigan and run you out of shells . . . we'll see

It was indeed a good day Dean. I don't think I've shot a ptarmigan since 1988. Am looking forward to sauteed bird parts tomorrow night.... they better be good; A conservative estimate of what it took to get them into the refrigerator would be around $100/lb, but who's keeping track, eh?

Nice work Rich, but a shotgun would have definitely been better. *wink*

So much for that plan. 40mph winds in the mtns turned me around; maybe tomorrow... Gets dark sometime around 9:30pm now I think. Seems we have something over 13 hrs of daylight now.
