Rog, I used about 6 rounds out of that box of PB #5s you gave me out of the Gaddy gun last Fall. As you say, they work fine on pheasant, one shot, one bird. Thanks.
Gordon and I are going up to Paul's shoot tomorrow. I thought Destry might be there.

Ben
P.s. I was even holding my head down, as if on the stock, as I was reading about you swinging the dh, leading the head.

To those who asked, I didn't look up Sherman's article, but my notes say he used 32 gr. of 7625. We found we got around 1200 fps with only 30 gr., and according to my notes that is what we stuck with (it's been two years since I loaded any, and I still have a couple turkey season's worth left). I think I remember RST having a very similar load available.
Roger, I think your 12 ga. load with #5s would be great. When I hunt with a damascus GH 12 ga. I use a similar load with 1-1/4 oz. of #5s, WAA-F114 wad, and 36 gr. of Blue Dot in a Federal paper basewad hull. It tested well with Tom Armbrust at 1277 fps and just under 7000 psi. I hunted with #4s as a kid and did well, but everyone else was all about shooting #6s. I tried them for a while, but they just weren't for me. I switched to #5s and have stayed with them ever since. A good compromise, I believe. Anyway, that box you have loaded up would be my choice.
Don K., good luck with the 16. I have a VH 20 (wearing a nice repro Silver's Pad, remember?) that I'd like to take at least one bird with one day. It's choked IC and M, so it would have to be a pretty close one. I haven't gotten up the nerve to try it yet. I refuse to use decoys, but that might be the time to make an exception.
To everyone else, thanks so much for the kind words and I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was fun for me to share a most unusual day in the field with folks that I knew would appreciate the finer points. Good luck to all of you this spring. When you get 'em, post 'em up!

One of the best ways to dust a mount is to use polyfil (the stuff used to fill pillows etc.) and dry wipe in the direction of the feathers/hair. Works far better than cotton batting.
