How can one tell a nice condition original dog's head buttplate from a repro one ?

Any key things to look for ?

                Thanks !

Original, unused. I don't know what a reproduction looks like.

Thanks !

That's what mine looks like (as far as I remember - I'll have to take it off again later & compare).     Mine almost looks "too good."   But, the gun itself is in really nice shape.   There is the slightest, tiny bit of wear visible at the very top, and same at the very bottom, so perhaps it's OK.

I checked my buttplate, and it's different from the one Bruce illustrated.    Mine is more of a "close-up" on the dog - you only see his head & a bit of neck (no legs are visible).   Another difference is you can see the dog's right ear on my plate.   Also, the dog has a few "weeds" over his neck, where on Bruuce's pic, the dog is in front of all the "weeds."

The top of the letter "S" on my plate is slightly flattened, where Bruce's plate has a rounded top to the "S."

Were there different "styles" of hard rubber butt plate ?   Could mine be correct (for a 1893 EH) ?    I can try to post pics, but I am really a tech idiot - may take a while...

Please  -  somebody let me know.

            Thanks !!!!

There were a bunch of different styles, all shown in The Parker Story, forgot the page number.

Whew !!!!    That's good news !      I'll have to get that reference book.

This is only my second Parker, so I don't know much at all !    My other one has a well worn plate that says "The Parker Trap Gun."    (The letter verified this plate, as it was ordered by Folsom in NYC in 1886.)

I ordered a letter on this EH - it'll be neat to see what it has to say...

                Thanks !

PS: If anyone has a picture of a butt plate that sounds like the one I described, please post !

John;In the Parker serialization book ,Page 43 is a picture of the plate you describe,Dogs head and a little bit of the neck, the head is at a slight angle and shows part of his right ear and all of the left side of the head and face, the caption reads ;Another Parker butt plate off of a 10 Ga. EH Grade gun #3 Frame made 1892. If your serial # corresponds with this date ,it should be correct. Also ,the book shows Bruce's plate to be 1902.

That is SO PERFECT !!!

   Indeed, mine is a 10 gauge EH, # 3 frame, made in 1893 !

(I'm so easily amused...)

Thanks !              (I can't wait to shoot this beast !  Ammo should be here soon !)
