Well, I figure I'd better post this as Bruce and a few others might think I didn't have a wonderful time Pheasant hunting in the Mid-west....  I did - and here is why....

A few months ago, I received a wonderful invite from PGCA Members Frank Sweeny & Charlie Herzog to join in a "Sweeny Family Hunt" in Kansas...  Now - let's be honest - being born and bred a "Northern Yankee" - I scrambled to Google to figure out where in the world Kansas is - and as well, a little town called Montezuma..? I found it..  It's a little town in Southwest Kansas - which, turns out - boasts a wonderful Pheasant population...

Personally - I've always hoped to pheasant hunt in a place where about 16,000 hunters are not stalking the that one pheasant that is released in the State of New Hampshire - which has been my typical pheasant hunting experience in NH.

What I'd also like to say, before we get on with the pictures - is THANK YOU to the Sweeny family and Charlie for "making this happen".  If you have never hunted pheasant in the mid-west - you have to do it..  It's an incredible experience...  Hunting on the stubble fields, milo patches and abondened farms is an experience that can't be duplicated elsewhere - especially when roosters start going up like roman candles...  I also want to acknowledge and thank the Brown family (Tim, Tom, Sherrie - etc. - of B&R in Montezuma - who opened their home and guide service to us..)..

Anyway....

Charlie met me at the St. Louis airport - and I spent a great evening with him and wonderful wife and son.  Next morning at "0'dark thirty" we started our 11+ hour trek to Montezuma, Kansas.  Along the way - we met up with Bruce Day at Cabela's in Kansas City - to oogle some guns, fondled some Parkers - and then ate a quick lunch (which, of course - I had to buy Bruce's lunch for him?? ;) )..  In spite of that - it was terrific to see Bruce again - as he was headed off to Montana or something?

Fortunately - being the quiet, shy and reserved person I am - I was able to listen to Charlie go on-and-on for hours on end - which really made the car ride pass quickly.  If you know Charlie - he's sort of like the energizer bunny rabbit on steroids - and a wonderful guy.

The hunt (pics by Charlie - THANKS Charlie!!)....

A couple of Parkers in Kansas - typical of where we hunted...

The first day..  We limited out by mid-day..? (nope - Charlie didn't shoot all those himself - but he well could have!  He's a fantastic shot, in spite of what he'll tell you..)

Frank Sweeny's cousin Mike (left) and Tim admiring Mike's rooster he brought down with a terrific shot...

Parker "porn" picture... ;)

Frank's brother Jack and Jack's son Mont - these two guys made us chuckle the entire trip...  :)

An abandoned farmstead - a haven for wayward pheasants  (This may be the same farm Mont shot the antenna tower - I dun'no?? ;) )

A typical hunting scene in Kansas...  Simply beautiful.....

Me, Tim (the guide and dog handler) and Charlie...

Anyway - my thanks to all of you - especially Frank, Charlie and the Sweeny family...  You made a Pheasant Phantasy of mine come true...  And to the Brown's??  Wonderful - wonderful hosts...

Best to all,

John

Glad you had a good time on my home grounds. Lots of places to hunt out here, and there are a lot of counties each having over 10,000 acres of public walk in hunting.

Kansas generates enough electricity through wind power to power the state and we send enough to Florida to supply 35% of its needs. Lots of wind farms in western Kansas.

Hope you got enough to eat out here.

Best regards, and thanks for lunch.

You are kidding - right??  Heck - even with all the walking - I probably gained 10 pounds in a couple of days!!  :)  The Brown's just keep the food coming for as long as you can sit at the table!!

Bruce - your part of the country is beautiful - and the folks out "your way" are some of the friendliest I've ever had the opportunity to meet...

Best to you Bruce - and thanks again for all!!

John
