I bought a 10ga. Grade III Lifter Gun yesterday ... Judging by the photo, the stock may need refinishing but you don't come across 10ga Grade III lifter guns every day and I got a good deal on it ... I can't wait to get it ... Waiting for a gun to arrive at my door is always the worst part of any deal for me.

I haven't seen the gun in person but I suspect the stains are either oil or some other liquid that got spilled on the stock before someone stood it up on the butt plate in a safe or a gun cabinet ... If my suspicions prove true I'll get the stock refinished or try doing  it myself.

Jim, I have a nice old hammer gun with an oilrun stain on each side of the stock. It appears to have run out of the locks after the gun was stood on end.It is on old deep stain and would be hard to remove.Good luck .

That looks like dark mineral streaks to me. Note that they run above and below the side plates and through the pistol grip in a different pattern than the stripes on the stock.

Dave ... I had a gun that got oil streaks like that after some stupid fool (me) got overzealous with an oiler ... I got the oil out after about a week of daily sanding with 400 grit paper until the oil stopped seeping out but I chickenrd out and sent the stock to be refinished by a pro because I didn't think I had the skill to do match the quality of the original finish myself.

There was also a post on this board a few weeks ago saying that oil can be removed from a stock by submerging it in acetone and drying it out in an oven several times until all the oil has been disolved so I may give that a whirl ... Or if I don't think I can do it right, I may just send it to the guy who did the other stock for me.

Jim,

Your a lucky man. Be sure to tell us more about this lifter when it arrives. I much prefer shooting with a lifter and can only guess that the European toplever craze prompted the change.
