Several members have asked where is everyone staying at the Southern Side by Side. We stayed at the Comfort Inn in Sanford last year and I plan on staying there this year. Their number is 1-919-774-6411. I am also asking those of you planning on attending to post a short note here telling me who you are and that you plan on shooting in the event. If you have any questions you can post them here and I will get them answered.

Greg, can we get the rules up we had  on the old board.

I'll be there for sure.  I hope to bring my son Corey along again this year.

He enjoyed it last year, but as this is his senior year in HS he may blow me off to chase skirts.

L.C. Smith vs. Parker Challenge Cup





 





The Southern Side by Side Championship


                                           

 

 

     This is a “heads-up” for all members of the L.C. Smith Collectors Association (LCSCA); and the Parker Gun Collectors Association (PGCA) who plan, and/or may be contemplating, attendance at the Southern Side by Side Championship in Sanford, North Carolina.  This year’s event is scheduled for the weekend of April 22-24, 2005, with the Challenge Cup event scheduled for Saturday, April 23.  This will be one of the most enjoyable shotgun events in which you can ever participate, and the Directors of the LCSCA and the PGCA encourage your participation.  Not only is this a fun event, but is also an opportunity to meet and fellowship with other LCSCA and PGCA members, explore two large tents jammed full of vintage guns, participate personally in membership meetings, experience Southern hospitality at its best, and use your shooting expertise to help win the Challenge Cup for your organization.  The rules are simple:

 

1)  Each shooter must be a member in good standing of the organization he/she is representing with dues paid current (membership rosters will be on hand and member names verified).  New members can sign-up for the event by joining the desired organization; but must submit a membership application with sufficient time remaining on the morning of the 23rd to participate in Event One, the Qualifying Round.

 

2)  Each participant in the Challenge Cup Event will pay an entry fee of $10 with all entry fees being donated to charity after completion of the event.  Each participant will pay the cost of all 5-stand practice rounds he/she elects to shoot, and also for participation in Event One and Event Two at the rate established for the event by the Deep River Shooting School (the 2004 rate was $10/round, but could change for 2005).

 

3)  Competition is open to any hammer/hammerless model and grade Smith or Parker gun produced at the original gunworks.  There will be no limitation/restriction on bore size as long as it is a bore size originally produced by Smith (8, 10, 12, 16, 20, 28 and .410 bore) or Parker (8, 10, 11, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 24, 28, and .410 bore).  Obviously some of these bore sizes represent prototypes, and all members would be thrilled to see such original gun; especially if its owner used it in  competition.  Modified/altered Smiths and Parkers are permitted (cut barrels, altered stocks, restored guns, guns with screw-in chokes; etc.).  Beginning with the 2005 event, shooters will be allowed to use chamber inserts, and may also use after-market full-length tubes (with or without screw-in chokes); but these devices are limited to DAMASCUS barreled guns ONLY.  Also, screw-in chokes, whether in modified original barrels or in aftermarket tubes, cannot be changed once shooting has begun; nor will a shooter be allowed to change/remove tube inserts.  Finally, modern reproductions and industry sponsored/professional shooters are not allowed to compete.

 

4)  The shooting venue will be a 5-stand competition, and will consist of 25 targets per round.  In Event One, each shooter will make his/her best effort to shoot the highest score possible.  Given the fact that Deep River is limited to one 5-stand layout, and also the confusion and delay caused with multiple shooters attempting to combine practice rounds with a qualifying effort, Mr. Kempfler will close the 5-stand venue to Smith/Parker shooters ONLY from 9AM to 12 Noon on the morning of the 23rd.  ALL Event One qualifying rounds will be shot during this reserved time period ONLY.  This one change is necessary in order to make the completion of Event One more efficient so that Event Two can be completed on a more timely basis.  Therefore, shooters desiring  preliminary 5-stand practice must arrive to on Friday the 22nd as that will be the only opportunity for preliminary practice.

 

5)  At the conclusion of Event One, the appropriate Smith and Parker officials will receive the scored results and determine the 10 highest member scores from each organization.  These 20 individuals will then be notified to prepare for the final Challenge Cup event which will begin at approximately 3:30PM.  Each shooter is encouraged check final results at the respective Parker/Smith display booths to determine if they may be in the final event, as each organization was unable to locate a qualifying shooter last year.  In that event, the next highest qualifying shooter will be placed on the team. 

 

6)  In the final, or Challenge Cup Event, each 10 person team is divided into two squads.  A coin flip determines which organization shoots first; and each 5-person squad will shoot 125 targets on a rotating basis( i.e. if Parker wins the toss and elects to field the first squad, the first Smith squad shoots in round two; and vice versa).   At the close of competition, total scores for each squad are tabulated and the best team score wins the 2005 Challenge Cup for their respective organization.  

 

7)  Individual shooter awards will be presented for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place high scores.  High scores for each award will be determined by the combined number of total broken targets in Event One and Event Two, the Challenge Cup Event.  In case of tied scores (which did occur in 2004 for the 3rd place Top Gun award ), the winner will be determined by the reverse long streak method (count consecutive broken targets from the last target broken back to the last missed target).  Last year’s winning Top Gun score was 41 x 50, proving this is an event where every shooter has an opportunity!

 

8)  The Challenge Cup and all individual awards will be presented on the evening of Saturday the 23rd at the Pig Pickin’ event.  The winning team will receive the Challenge Cup and have the honor of engraving their organization’s name and date on the cup in commeration their achievement; and also a permanent team award.  In April, 2006 the winning organization must return the cup, and will then be required to defend the cup and their honor at the Southern Side by Side.

 

 

We wish to emphasize that this is an event open to all Smith and Parker gun enthusiasts who still like to use their favorite gun.   One of the most interesting aspects of this event in 2004 was that some very good shooters from both organzations, who shoot on a regular basis, CHOKED under the strain of competition and were relegated to cheer leader status for the Challenge Cup final.  This is all part of the fun, and we encourage you to come and participate.  In 2004 the LCSCA was in it’s infancy and the lateness of event planning limited promotional efforts; but, even with those limitations, the event was well attended with 21 Smith and 30 Parker shooters.   Given the very favorable conclusion of the 2004 event, both organizations are expecting even better member participation for 2005.  As there can only be one winner; and, as both organizations more determined than ever to either win, or retain, the Challenger Cup for 2005, your support is imperative.  Don’t miss this opportunity.  Bring your prejudiced opinions, pull for your team, and have a great time!

Mark this is RogerCoger and I'll be there with O'l Clunker and my wife if she has not run away by then.

The only comment I will make about the rules and shooting program is we are starting the final round at (3:30) Seems we are back to late in the afternoon again. But I will be there just the same if qualified.

Eightbore says "If Y'all don't get loose of that 3:30 starting time and hold this final in high daylight, Mr. Eightbore will shoot (lefthanded) a cylinder bored eight gauge with 2 1/2 ounces of #10 shot in front of about six drams of FG."  You know, some of us are getting old and having a hard time holding on to our high end cards in various shooting disciplines.  I just got my NSSA card for 2005 and I may start shooting the eight gauge at American Skeet birds.

When I first came home from the U.S. Army in the late 60's, I was struggling with a new home, kids, etc. but I somehow ended up with a cased, mint, Westley Richards Bar in Wood eightbore that somehow escaped unused from the Eastern Shore of MD.  In those days, there was no reason not to shoot a gun like that as long as it was properly cleaned and maintained.  I shot that old lightweight for awhile at skeet targets with medium loads of small shot over maybe four drams of FG.  I never really understood why I never missed, considering the gun weighs about 12 pounds and was obviously a dedicated waterfowl gun.  The secret got out after I had owned the gun for a few years.  Upon measuring the bores, I found that it had absolutely no choke and threw about a four and a half foot, full coverage pattern at 25 yards!

You gotta shoot one of your BIG bores at the 5 stand range if only just for entertainment value! 

I suspect that you'd gather quite a gallery to cheer after each shot.  I know I wouldn't miss it!

I made a reservation for Friday night at the Comort Inn. Will leave here early that morning And drive back after Saturday's shoot.  I have never shot five stand so think I should just watch and cheer the gang to victory. Looking forward to meeting all these guys I have posting.

I'm glad to hear your coming, I am really looking forward to meeting you in person.  The people are fun and you'll never see a nicer looking rack of real "shootin" guns than in the rack at the 5 stand during when the Parker guys are hanging around. 

Bring a gun or we'll make you shoot one of ours!  You've got to try it to be properly trained to cheer and jeer at the rest of us!

Once you watch a round or two you'll get a feel for it.  You shoot 5 shots from each of 5 stands, for 25 total.  At each stand you shoot a single, a following pair and a simultaneous pair.  You can shoot 2 times at the single if you need to, it counts regardless of which shell you get it with.

Hick, I know you live rather close, but most of us like to stay over Thursday night so we can wake up early Friday and look at guns for awhile, then shoot for awhile.  Plenty of us will be at the hotel Thursday evening.  Please extend your stay one day.  It's only money.  As I remember last year, Destry, Rich, Roger, I, and others were in attendance Thurday evening at the motel.  Evening meals are a 50 foot walk from your room, OK, 100 foot walk.  I was and will be accompanied by The Lovely Linda, so I may take some meals with her alone, but you will have plenty of company.  Murphy
