Protecting case colors

Forgive me if this is already known, I had not seen it posted in previous discussions.

I recently acquired the below rifle from Dough and his crew over at Turnbull. It is a fabulous gun and the case coloring is fabulous, surpassed only by the checkering.

In speaking to a member of the staff there about protecting the CCH he commented that it should be pretty durable on there as they put a clear cerakote finish on top of the case colors.

I have limited experience with cerakoting, and what I have is definitely not clear, but I was actually impressed to hear this. I can't see the coating visually when looking at the rifle and that should give it some pretty serious protection.

Anyway, just thought I would share the info.

Oscar Gaddy told me years ago that he used Testors clear on his restorations..

Wipe your metal surfaces with Rem Oil and wear gloves when handling/shooting your gun.

We tried Krylon clear coat on a couple of aluminum fishing reels.

It eventually flaked; and we just lived with how it looked, not knowing what damage might be done by applying chemicals to remove the remaining coating.

I have been advised by an experienced Parker owner just to use Rem Oil, too.

A very old friend and gunsmith used Birchwood Casey True Oil applied with his finger, and a Q tip in the hard to reach surfaces. If the finish starts to wear or peel, just remove it with a good solvent and re-apply. Picks up co;or, and helps protect the colors from the suns rays!!
