Thanks, Keavin. We hunted a farm last week that had lots of heavy cover. I commented to Elaine that I’d bet a good lab could get up a bird or two here.

Thanks, Chris. So, are you finding any birds for your pup?

Found a covey the other day of 6 bobs. See photo and the classic "tail-down" point! They may not be stylish but they so love to hunt and find birds!

Wonderful! I think intensity trumps all in a point. Happy to hear you’re finding some birds.

Not finding a lot. I spoke to a South Carolina DNR biologist a couple weeks ago and he said the last count they did this summer revealed very poor numbers. I just feel fortunate to be able to scramble around the coverts with a brace leading the way!

Garry, I am really enjoying the quail hunting inWV this year. The birds were released in late summer and seem to have acclimated well. They flush and fly hard. The cover is really rough to get through. Hunted different area today and got into 2 covies.
I heard Willie's bell stop and as Doodle came by she slammed a point. A single got up which I dropped and then 2 more on report and dropped one with the left barrel
As I started to reload, the rest of the covey flushed, I got 1 shell in the gun, slammed it shut, swung on the wide open bird, but forgot to hit the safety again on the little VHE 20.R
ATS! Moved a few singles with on 1 shot presented, but missed. Willie found another covey for me on the next hill and made good on that shot to finish out my limit of 3.
This is on a public hunting area look at the pure stands of autumn olive.

Harold, I’m so glad you have found quail to hunt. Is there much competition? I can empathize with your “quick reload” to shoot situation. I seem always to have my gun open after the first shot when a sleeper gets up. I chalk it up to conservation. 😜

Good luck with your remaining season…and keep us posted.

Will Elaine and I see you at Pheasant Fest this year? I hope so. If not then, maybe the Southern?

Garry, no not much competition. Ive seen one other bird hunter in 6 hunts there. He was from about 2 hours away and had a pretty little female setter on his front seat. He only had a couple hours to hunt as he was in the area to give an estimate on some type of industrial job. I showed him a couple areas where I had been successful before, and heard him shoot later.
Mid January will find my friend Terry and I in SE S Dakota for 5 days. I hope to get in a few more quail hunts before season closes Jan 6th.
No plans for Pheasant Phest but may make it to the Southern.
