Any suggestions on how to remove the "brown" from the barrels? I see a lot of the beautiful Damascus patterning hiding under there and would like to lightly clean off the brown to get down to it. It doesnt appear to be rust.

Personally - for now, I would just wipe it lightly with oil on a pad for now, that will stabilize the brown and prevent future rust and show the pattern some. Refinishing damacus is an invovled process. The first thing for the barrels is to evaluate the condition, are there dents to be removed and how are the bores? And figure out the wall thickness.
have you "rung" the barrels? hang them by the lug on one finger and flick a finger nail against the tubes. (don't drop 'em ) you should hear a tone simlilar to a small bell or tuning fork, a dull clunk will indicate a joining issue. this is one item you might want to send to a pro for evaluation.

just did the finger test and yes they ring like a bell. There are some dents in the barrels but nothing I think could not be removed.
bores look ok although need a good cleaning. |

The "brown" seems to be coming off with the oil/cotton wipe. I think it is a varnish or laquer?? Maybe someone put it on there long ago?
this is going to be a slow process. You dont think I could use oil and some bronze wool very lightly? |

Michael, oil and bronze wool work wonders. Brass bristled toothbrushes are handy and very inexpensive. I go through a lot of Q-Tips, No. 9 Solvent, pipe cleaners, etc. when I do a 'project'. I bought a bazillion dental picks off E-Bay and use them religiously! I also use stainless steel toothbrushes on surfaces that are not exposed. They usually don't cause any damage, but why take the chance. Once you scrape off what most folks refer to as 'patina', you are left with the metal in its aged form. This may involve some pitting, but it is better than scaly rust. Good luck

with some light cleaning I have found what appears to be a duck sitting in a marsh on the bottom of the receiver!
