Default Montana Bird Hunting

Just returned to Arizona from week bird hunting in the Lewistown, Geraldine, Coffee Creek and Denton, Montana areas. Excellent pheasant hunting and limited 4 of 5 days as high winds on Friday made bird hunting every unpleasant. Good pheasant population, sharptail numbers were ok but scattered and located 5 huns coveys in a week and couldn't bring myself to shoot any because of their poor numbers.
My American Brittany is in her prime ( 5 years old) and she put on a upland game dog clinic. Brother had is mature Braque France and his new 13 week Braque puppy and she showed signs of a future bird dog.
Shot my 1914 Fox 12 gauge with RST number 7s because of great dog work Wednesday three shots and three pheasants with last two as a double.
Already planning my 2020 trip.
However will be in the same area fly fishing in June for two weeks.

I just posted prior to you Scott. We headed into the Superstitions this past Sunday for birds, and an early limit. Didn't hear or see one Gambels. I went home demoralized!

Spent last Thursday and Friday, in heavy winds, at the Sharptail Lodge, Geyser MT. Had fine hunting, started off the morning with a Sharptail double, and I’m not a good shot, got a third later in the day and ended with pheasant. The next morning it was pheasant time and we shot three before noon. Great lodge and hunting.

Separately, the week before on a variety of ponds around Livingston and shooting with my son, we got a couple of ducks each day. Mostly early season teal and gadwalls. The Mallards are now flying and my son and his friends are filling the freezer.

The pheasant population around Geraldine was wonderful, I haven't seen flushes of 30-40 birds since the glory years in Iowa and the Dakota's. Friend called last night to tell me about the outstanding Sharptail hunting they had in Stanford area last two days.
