Default Trying to Gas Up - at Sea

Thought you might enjoy looking at some pictures from back in the day.

I have many old 8mm movies that I'm converting to digital. With that, Snapshots can be made from the movie footage. As you can see, they are definitely not HD (High Def) but viewable.

Below are some Snapshots of refueling at sea while I was on the USS Allagash AO-97, a fleet oiler, aka - tanker that's basically a sea going gas station.

We were attempting to refuel that destroyer, tin can in Navy jargon, the USS Abbot DD-629. Probably in the late summer of 1957 somewhere in the North Atlantic.

Higher up, better minds decided to refuel some other day when conditions were better. As in the 5th picture that's more typical.

Those were the days. I remember them well. All good.

This what it should look like . . .

This is what we look like, our sister ship- the USS Pawcatuck AO-108

Those are great pictures Bill. I sure wish Robin Lewis was still a member here, he would love to see those. Robin’s a dyed in the wool Navy man!

Great pictures Bill.

I was in the U.S. Navy for 11 years but only spent 180 days at sea. A placid UNREP from my 1972 WestPac on the USS Ticonderoga. An updated WW-II carrier that was older than I was at the time.

To everyone who served, thank you. We (or at least myself and my family) never take it for granted. Godspeed.
