Default New guy to the forums

Hello, I just acquired this Parker 10 gauge from my grandfather. I have been admiring it sitting in the corner of his living room as a conversation pc for years and I jokingly asked him to sell it to me and he took me up on it.
I have no interest in getting rid of it and I’m sure it’s not worth much in its condition. But just holding something with so much history is cool.
I’ve done a little research on this website based on the serial number, but any info would be great. Serial number is 25788. Chart says produced in 1882.
It’s a 10 gauge 30 inch Damascus barrel grade 2.
The bore is pretty pitted and action is loose. There is a copper or brass nameplate on the tang, but cannot make out anything.
Thanks for looking. By the way, he let me have it for $100.00. He told me it wasn’t worth much in its condition, and I think he bought it for $20 years ago. So in his mind he got a good deal. In my mind it’s the best $100.00 I’ve spent in a long time.
Haven’t figured out how to post pictures yet.

No matter the condition or the worth, you got a deal and I believe you realize that. Congratulations!

A great family heirloom but you know it’s gonna be a money pit.

Now it can hang on your wall as a great conversation piece. But oh, the stories it could tell !

You’re a lucky guy to have that family heirloom. We had a similar top action hammer gun in the family that belonged to my great great grandfather who lived in Bristol, Ct and fought in the Civil War. It was dark, dirty and heavy and it had a broken hammer. When I was a kid I was fascinated by it. Sadly my uncle scrapped it in the 1970s, convinced the Damascus barrels were unsafe. Oh how I wish we still had that gun.

Have someone evaluate the bores, some one knowledgable about vintage guns. They may not be as bad as you think. The exterior is not all that bad.

Thanks, any suggestions on cleaning it up a bit? Maybe getting the dark spots out so the engraving shows a little better? Is it ok to use a soft brass brush and some oil? Or should I just leave it?
