Default Checkering finish

Ive noticed that on many restored Parkers the checkering seems to be stained or somehow finished darker than the uncheckered wood surfaces. I like the way it looks. Would someone tell me how that is done? Thanks, Brent

Generally done by painting darker colored stain into the checkered areas. To each his own...
