Default Opinions on this W&C Scott 10 ga

I looked at this gun a few months back but then it was gone so I figured it was sold but it was relisted today . Its a 10 gauge hammergun with 3.5" chambers and at a hefty 11lbs . The dolls head doesnt look original to the barrels so I am wondering if it was rebarreled and the old dolls head attached to the new set ?

The forend looks horrendous but thats fixable .

The barrels and doll's head look original to me. Perhaps refinished. The stock surely has been refinished. It's built on license by Scott on a Purdey patent thumb break action. Quite common.

Think its the original barrels someone lengthened to 3.5" ? Its on the heavy side for a Scotts 10 gauge , ive seen one other Scott 10 gauge that was 11lbs that was also 3.5" chambers . The proof marks would really tell what is going on with the gun . I know the English had a 3 1/4" chamber 10 gauge so perhaps it was one someone lengthened . I had a C G Bonehill 10 ga hammer gun before that someone had reamed the chambers out to 3.5" .

Well the muzzles look much thicker than any other W&C Scott 10 gauge I have seen and ive looked at alot of them . Scotts 10 gauges seem to show up more than any other English maker its seems . I have seen 2 that had been rebarreled in England and around this price range which is why I was curious if it was the case with this one . Which is odd in it self considering how much it cost to have a new set of barrels made . I dont see any sleeving marks either if it was re chambered over there it should have proof marks to show it .

I think a 10 ga magnum hammer gun would be pretty sweet if its not a bomb

Yes. It could have been sleeved. But where? In the US, there's no proof requirement. From the look of the gun, it's had its share of "enhancement." Barrel wall thickness at the chamber's end is the key. Otherwise, it seems OK for the price range. Perhaps a bit high. There's a lot of work to get it half way decent again.

I wonder how much it costs to make a new forend ? I see 5k as the normal price to fully restock a sidelock . I wonder if the stock is original though the grip looks elongated compared to others . Theres also a NID 10 mag listed cheaper than ive ever seen one but again its forend has been replaced with what looks like a 2x6 piece of lumber I wondered how much it would cost to have a new one made .

there are better guns right now for the money and I dont think it would be smart to buy a project I intend to use so close to season .

I like the Purdey thumb lever. It should have a patent use stamp and number on the action flats. J.P. Followed by a number.

Ive never gotten any replies when trying to ask Cabelas about old doubles they list . The stamps and proof marks would be the only way to tell what is going on with the chambers though .

There was a Francotte 10 ga that sold recently with 3.5" chambers that was clearly marked on the barrel flats 2 7/8" and it was not a heavy 10 ga either .

It’s a nice looking gun. I noticed they didn’t give the DAC and DAH. Looks pretty severe to me.
