Today i recieved the woodcock wing reports from F & W. Last year we killed more mature than juvenile birds, usually it is 3 young to 1 adult. This year was the reverse 3--1 adult.
This only indicates our very limited results and i will have to wait to see if our results are indicative of a poor breeding season in 2019. I hope to see their whole survey results soon.

Haven't seen a single grouse around here in at least three months and our season opens in 4 days if you can believe that. We're about at the bottom of the cycle.

In my several decades of grouse hunting in VT I have seen several lows in the grouse cycle. They always come back up to one degree or another... some peak years are better than the peak years in other cycles, and some are not.

I am sorry to hear of your low in the cycle Richard. I don't know if WNV has affected the birds in your area but here in the Northeast it has had an almost devastating effect.

We're good for mudbat. We actually had at least one hanging about inside the short course during this past week's SxS event and we usually find them where we do habitat work on the gamelands. As for grouse I see a few on our property. I may have to hunt up near Cold Spring's cabin though. He always finds grouse on the old roads on those gamelands!

Mike my friend you're always welcome to hunt with me but this year your cell with its map location app stays in the cabin and turned off.

Well I kinda anticipated the cell in your pocket last time and didn’t take you to Lilac, God’s Road, Slashings or any other favorite grouse haunts.
